Your his mother, just ask him. You have every right to ask him and even go through his things to find out. That's not always the best choice, but you can and sometimes parents should.

My parents went through my things a long time ago and boy, was I so POed at them. But I got over it. They only did it to protect me and because they loved me. If you decide to do that, your son might not see that right away, but eventually he will.

But, just start by asking him outright. See what happens and go from there. It might also help if you give specific examples of why you think that (i.e. smells like smoke, found cigarette, heard it from someone, etc.).

Just remember, YOU ARE THE PARENTS, HE IS THE KID!!

Good luck!

There is no reason for you to be apolegetic. If you are sure about his smoking, you can ask him the truth. Tell him to say the truth and if it is true tell him the bad effects of smoking, how it affects the lungs which can later turn out to be cancer etc. Also make him understand that world over people are trying to quit smoking and here you have started it. Ask him to better stop it and concentrate on his studies, sports etc. I am sure he will understand your point. Also remeber that a 15year old has to be instructed properly at home for him to become a good citizen later.

If your son thinks or knows that you are not going to be happy about him smoking, what makes you think he is going to tell you the truth?
When my parents asked me, even though they USED to smoke themselves, I lied straight to their faces.
If you really want to know, then your going have to catch him in the act, sorry.

Sit him down and talk to him just like you would if he was doing something else stupid and dangerous or you thought he might be.
Tell him you have reason to think he might have been smoking and that you are worried that it might be true. Tell him why that bothers you, talk to him about all your concerns like it ruining his skin and teeth and causing him to die young as well as ruining his social life since many girls won't date a smoker. Take to him about the cost in buying, ruined clothing, dry cleaning and buying things like lighters.
Then talk to him about the smell, burned clothing and how stupid it makes people look.
Tell him you love him too much to allow him to do this to himself and if he is doing it he needs to quit, if he hasn't tried it beg him not to.

Sit him down and before you tell him, say that whatever you say next, you're not attacking him, and just want to know...

Be calm in your voice -

Good luck -

Tell him that teenagers smoking is so cliche. Also tell him "Amber" (or someone he likes/looks up to) thinks that it's effeminate.
