My best friend is an alcoholic. I accompanied him to a alcohol rehab last Wednesday because I finally convinced him to get some help. The doctor and the counselor said that he has to undergo a detoxification first. What is detoxification? Is it really necessary? My best friend is asking me these questions and I don't know what to answer.

Yes, it is very important. See, detoxification is the removal of all that excess alcohol in the body. It really is the first step to recovery. Your friend has to clean his body and remove all of the filth that caused his alcoholism. A clean body complements a clear mind. Detoxification will help your friend become sober. [edit] Alcohol detoxification
Main article: Alcohol detoxification
Alcohol detoxification is used as a form of drug rehabilitation to treat alcoholism or other drug addiction. The process involves abstinence to clear the drug from the body, accompanied by social and environmental support during the associated physiological and psychological changes.

Detoxification is the process of allowing the body to rid itself of a drug while managing the symptoms of withdrawal. It is often the first step in a drug treatment program and should be followed by treatment with a behavioral-based therapy and/or a medication, if available. Detox alone with no follow-up is not treatment.

detoxification is coming down off the addiction to the chemical (alcohol). It gets it out of your system (you do not take in any to re-up your system with the needed addiction).

Yes, the person HAS to do it. Detoxification is good because in one way, it cleans the body of the chemical..
and another..the person can see how much it hurts to come off it (the addiction) thereby (hopefully) making them feel less of a want to go right back out and do it again..because coming off of it does not feel so good.

All I can think of is that old 1960s song by Loretta Lynn - Don't come home a-drinkin' with lovin' on your mind. BQ - I work with a man in his 50s who has become painfully addicted to Internet porn. He's in that phase where he hates what he does but that compulsion to act out is overpowering. He's married and has a sweet, respectable relationship with his wife....a very fine woman...but they've drifted apart. He feels like they're brother and sister instead of a husband and wife. The shame and confusion became too much for him until the fateful Saturday afternoon I took him fishing and he completely opened up. "How can I break a forty-five-years-old habit?" Addiction can quickly become a painfully lonely aspect in a person's life. The addiction makes them feel as if no one understands their struggle. It can even lead its victim to despair and pitch him over the edge.

for an alcoholic detox consists of the same thing as it does for anyone that abuses a substance, its a period of time, that varies from person to person based on how much, how often he drank, in addition to his size, and how long it had been going on, etc.
its a period of time their body needs to remove the substance completely to where they no longer feel the effects, not just drunkenness, but the actual alcohol running through their blood stream, their brain, their liver.
there are things that can be done to aid/speed this process. drinking lots of water, in addition to fruits and fruit juices known for their antioxidant properties. extra rest and exercise are also very helpful.

it is necessary to get him to a state to where he can think about his condition in a completely sober state. any amount of alcohol in his body could cause him to back track and rethink his decision to get help.

hope that helps.

good luck to you and your friend.

This kind of detox is medically overseen. He will have to take medication to prevent withdrawl symptoms. And yes it is necessary.

Yep, if you stop drinking you will detox. That's what the liver and kidneys do.
