Well...you have to look for it.

Seriously. If a painting seems without signature it usually is but some do have a signature that is hidden by the artist or by someone that re-framed the painting.

The first can be very hard to find. You just have to look everywhere. The second you can usually hope to find it when you take the painting out of it's frame and check the hidden parts.

Rent the movie"who in the xxxx is Jackson Pollock.
This is a two hour very intriguing documentary about how to find out who the painter is of an unsigned painting that if authenticated was worth over fifty million dollars. I was shocked how difficult this whole process is,even with forensic science. You will find more infor in this movie than can be written here. Establishing an unsigned piece is a very interesting and frustrating journey.
As an artist I have often forgotten to sign something before it is shipped and have people who check this stuff for me. After seeing the movie I make sure nothing leaves the studio unsigned.
