So does that mean when I have children, I shouldn't get them christened? What is the meaning of having a godparent anyways? If there a non-religious alternative? All I rememeber my godparents doing is buying me presents!

God parents are supposed to be like your second family. They are supposed to help your parents out with you and be there for you as moral support as well as a Christian support (but non-Christians have god parents too). Used to, they would help pay for college and stuff like that.

If you're not a Christian then you don't have to christen your kids. That is your choice. However you raise your kids and whatever your religious status is, is between you and God. Not you and your parents or anyone else. So, it's up to you.

If you're not religious, why would you have them christened?

The christening is an external action symbolizing that your child is signed, sealed and delivered to be one of Christ's own.

If you don't believe in that, then don't do it.

Your godparents didn't really have to do anything because your parents lived. Had they died, your godparents made the promise to attend to your religious education.

Sweet that they bought you presents, though, huh?

I don't know of a non-religious alternative, but I'm sure there probably is some ritual performed in Wicca that is a knock-off of the christening ceremony.

This is mainly a Catholic thing. I believe the reason for godparents is if the parents die or are unable to take care of the child the godparents do it. If you do not want to do it you don't have to. It doesn't say in the Bible to do it anyways.

I think that the whole point is just to have good moral standards. All religion is is just a whole bunch of people who agree on the same standards, and practice them together. Decide the way you feel about the aspects in life, and do what you are comfortable with, and don't what you are not. Don't let religious people tell you that unless you perform certain rituals that they do, that you are not a moral person, and that you are not setting a good example for your children. Just practice good boundaries and being compassionate, and I think that the cards will fall into place...

If you are not religious, there is no reason to have your children christened. You and your family can believe in God without bringing your child up within the church.

I am not religios either but i do beleive in a 'BELIEF SYSYEM" called "CHRISTIANITY" though. Christianity is not a religion but a belief system....You choose to believe or not to beleive in what God says is, does, and has already done.

They also took a vow that in case something happened to your parents they would take care of you until you were grown.
