The cons? Pay could probably be better. Being away from loved ones is another. The possibility of dying. Could happen in training as well as war. The list is longer than the Pros, however, the Pros still outweigh the cons on merit alone.
Pros: Serving your country....forget the politics. There are friends you will make, the places you will see, and the memories no one can take away from you, good or bad, and I promise you, the good will outweigh the bad. Retirement, if you go the career route, and there is definitely more consideration given a vet in the job market. A lot of companies get a kick back from the government for hiring vets, as well as getting a disciplined, loyal, punctual and motivated employee. If you are married: on post housing with no rent, power, sewer, water or gas bill. Just pay for your phone and cable TV. Free medical for you and your family.
I did the time, been in the good and bad places and have no regrets of what I have done, been where I have been. I have no nightmares about some of the things I have done or seen. It is a profession. Not personal. You do because that is your JOB. You have to keep everything in the right context.
If you can't, then add that to your cons list.

You aren't your own boss.
You live where you are told to live.
You eat what you are given to eat.
You do what you are told to do.
You may even have to kill who you are told to kill.
AND you do it under less than comfortable living conditions.
Then you have to get berated by American Leftists who want to see you DIE.
I sure am glad there are people out there who have the courage and integrity to a patriot. I put in four years during Viet Nam, but I could never be a career man. I guess I'm just too independent, even though I believe in participating in essential military service.

Picking up cigarette butts and raking ice plant.

However, even that builds character, so I have to say there are no cons to military service.

death and the military having you by the you know what.
But i do thank the troops over their keeping us safe. Just dont like how the military shows all this great stuff then alot of people come out dissapointed. Also their recruiters are like salesman they dont leave you alone and I think they get commision for getting you to sign up so like all salesman they might lie to get you to sign.

You will never get more exhausted than you will in Basic.

Your hours will be 24 / 7 when posted.

You will often have to make life or death decisions.

You will be putting your life at risk in order to help others.

But, it was one of the best things I ever did.

The administration we have now will see you as disposable. They are already denying medical care to vets who have served our country. While it is truly noble to serve our country and support our troops. Shrub should have his head on a stick for the **** he is allowing to go on.

Being sent to die in a senseless war that has nothing to do with the protection of your motherland.

Apart from that, it's great!

Possibility of DEATH springs to mind.
Being underpaid for a very hard job.
Being away from your loved ones.
Being sent away to fight wars of dubious legitimacy.
