No. I think kids are spared the rod too much these days. We had corporal punishment in school, and while there were those who abused it, it certainly kept a lot of order. We didn't have nearly as many problems in our schools back then.

Assuming that we are differenciating between beating a child (which is abuse) and spanking children (which is NOT abuse)...

Up until modern times, the school teacher held the place of a parent while the children were under their care. It was just as much the teacher's duty to administer punishment for disobedience and willfulness as it was their duty to teach any other subject. It was a supliment for the same upbringing that the child should be receiving at home.

However, in our day and age, parents have literally abdicated their duties of properly raising their children - including physical discipline - and with the decline of parenting came the total disrespect of teachers and their possitions.

Today the lie is being taught that spanking a disobedient child only teaches them violence. Yet the record provides for the opposite. In today's "enlightened" modern societies where physical discipline is frowned upon, we are producing the most violent and ignorant children in history. Contrary to the odious anti-discipline doctrine infecting and infesting society, spanking a disobedient child teaches the child not to do wrong. Simply telling a child not to do wrong is ignorant, because the child is then not instilled with a knowledge of what consequences of actions are. And we wonder why our jails are filled to capacity!

While I don't think spanking works for all offenses,it does have its place. However I fully disagree with the teachers being able to hit a child while a mother or father can not. After all if their displaniary rights had not been so curtailed by susposedely well meaning folks and laws then they wouldn't have the problems in the schools. It all comes down to respect and parents get very little all around someone always disagrees with the way you want to raise your child while saying be sure you do.Crossover lines very seldom work and thats the problem.

Spanking is a measure used by people that have no authority or control over children, they just need to develop skills. There were some teachers in my time that showed personal authority and had my total respect, the teachers that yelled and hit students were the classes in which people continued to muck up. Personally I will only hit my child if they were doing something that would cause them physical harm such as running out into the middle of the road, as this has physical consequences. When I show them I am in control, I earn their respect

Last year I taught 4th & 5th grades. Before that I subbed Kinder through 8th grades, and the behaviors I have seen would shock most people! It's very common for kids in elementary & middle school today to have ZERO respect for teachers and say things that I NEVER would have dreamed of saying to a teacher when I was in school in the '80's. Last year I had a 4th grade boy (so we're talking a 9 year old) challenge me verbally every opportunity he got. It blew me away!!! He'd argue with me in front of the whole class with NO fear or respect! Ironically, he ended up being a big fan of mine at the end of the year and wrote me sweet, cute letters, but my Lord he was SO disrespectful!!! It showed me that his mother (as he had no father) must not discipline him at home.

A teacher is not allowed to physically reprimand a student, at least not in the CA public schools. As a teacher, I wish it was my job to solely teach academics, but I found myself last year having to spend a lot of valuable teaching time on classroom discipline and teaching life lessons to the kids as well. In an ideal world the parents do the disciplining, but so many parents just plead with their kids or give in and don't bother to discipline. When I watch "Supernanny" I think "Oh NO!! This kid could be in my classroom one day!!"

Using the rod for children of school age does no good. In fact, it models violent behavior, creates more anger and frustration, and produces frightened kids who will not have the self-esteem and courage to meet life's challenges. Our teachers should never be put into the position of having to punish children in this manner - they have more important things to do. Children should appreciate education as a gift, not be conditioned to think of it as punishment.

first off i want to state there is a very fine line between physical punishment and physical abuse. that being said i believe physical punishment e.i.spankings, a slap on the hand etc....should be left to the parent. i know i would be pi$$ed if a teacher spanked my daughter.

I personally believe in corporal punishment in schools, and especially with all the shootings, I say they should be able to keep guns in a handy place.....it's ridiculous, let 'em take 'em out if they have to.
