Spikes provide traction when you are running on a non-concrete or non-asphalt surface.
The spikes are not attached to the shoe at all times...they wear down and must be changed after every race. There is a "key" that is used to twist the spikes out and twist new ones back in.
You should ask your coach...certain spikes are reserved for specific events....cross country spikes are different than sprinting spikes and those are different from long jumping spikes, etc. There are regulations about that and you can be disqualified from an event if you have the wrong size.

The sole job of having spikes on racing shoes is get more traction. Different types of races require different types of spikes or no spikes at all. For instance on a regular all weather track short spikes would do the job but on hard packed dirt tracks you may need to bump up to a medium sized spike. CC runners dont generally where spikes but when running in muddy or loose dirt conditions some runners might like to wear a long spike. Personally I have never seen spikes worn in CC because the courses I have experienced in 3 seasons all have multiple terrains on them that would make wearing spikes a hinderance rather than help. But in track cant remember a race that I didnt wear spikes in because the course remained a constant terrain that made it possible to choose a proper spike for the course, which was generally a short spike. And yes spikes need to be replaced but they do not need to be replaced after every race. I would say after every 2 or 3 races would be more than often enough.

Following could be the reason for putting on running shoes(spikes) :
1) Running with bare feet causes accident.
2) Running with only shoes(spike less) may slip and cause accident.
3) Running shoes(spikes) hold firm on the ground to protect from accident
4) Balance the body while running.
For long distance or marathon running one need light shoes without spikes.

Spikes are used to help you race faster, not slip when starting, and are lighter than running shoes.
Most have spikes that can be removed so you can change types and sizes. You can not run in the shoes without the spikes.

In cross country, spikes are a must for rolling courses and/or when elements like rain come into the mix. You can get away with using "racing" shoes on "hard" surfaces; courses that have a number of asphalt crossings and dirt trails where the top surface is not soft - typically in very hot weather. There are flats built for x-c racing, but what you purchase - if everything is equal - should be based on the courses you'll be seeing for the season.

i think it helps you grip the floor or something.
for most shoes you could take off the spikes (in case they get worn down and need to be replaced)
