Its ragweed season here in Kentucky and my allergies are kicking my tail! I cant take my usual prescription antihistamine because its not compatable with breastfeeding. Im seeing my doctor next friday, the soonest he could get me in.
Anyone know of an OTC antihistamine that is safe while breastfeeding. I cant take benedryl, it knocks me out!
Thanks!

Claritin should be OK while breastfeeding, but ask your Dr. You may not see any improvement with it though if you're allergies are kicking your butt right now. If you start taking antihistamine, make sure to get a ton of water. Can you take Benadryl at night at least? I've found that helps me tremendously when the Claritin doesn't help so much during the day.

A few things that you can do which are medication free:

1. Do not go outside early in the morning or in the early evening when the pollen counts are high. Go outside between 2 and 4pm.

2. Avoid being outside when grass is being cut.

3. If you go to the park, the moment you get inside, take a hot shower & wash your hair. Put your clothes in the hamper and get dressed in fresh clothing.

4. Do not line dry your clothing (pollen).

5. Stay away from alcohol, coffee and watermelon and melons (xreact with ragweed)

6. Make sure you have the air conditioning on in your car (don't open the windows) - it will filter the air.

7. Similarly, keep the windows in your home closed & the air conditioning on.

Best of luck

I get terrible allergies, and here's what helps me when I don't want to or can't take meds:

1. take a shower anytime you are exposed to the allergen
2. there's a product by 'neilmed' that is a water bottle and packets of saline solution that you use to wash out your nasal passages. it feels really uncomfortable, but it REALLY works!

you can get it at walgreens, i put the site there so you can see what the packaging looks like.

good luck!

As you already know you are allergic like I am n I myself had tried hell lot of sprays n medicines..

My doc suggested me this n it really worked for me - I use a few drops of oil (any oil that suits you like coconut, almond, i use almond oil) a day into my nostrils, so that the allergen doesn't come in direct contact with my nose membrane thus prevently any allergic reaction.....

maximum antihistamines will dry up your milk. while i replaced into nursing, I used Beconase AQ steroidal nasal spray. because of the fact it somewhat is a nasal spray, it would not get into your finished physique like taking a pill does. it somewhat is prescription purely.

my best advice is to call a 24 hour pharmacy and speak to the pharmacist. they can advise you on the safest thing that you can do and if there are any medications safe to take.
do not take chances with untrained advice here, the pharmacist is trained and there to help.
