The knife and the spoon both have their uses, depending on what you're eating. Can't eat soup or peas with a knife, can't cut meat with a spoon. Small stuff isn't easy to pick up with your fingers either, and while you can tear your meat, it's still good to have a knife to cut at least *some* smaller pieces if you're faced with a whole cow ::grin::
The fork I'd say is least necessary; while in modern table manners it's quite useful, people did without a fork for a very long time, and while they would get greasy fingers they could still eat just fine!

The spoon definitely, it can do three functions:
1/ As a spoon conveys liquid/semi solid foods from the plate tothe mouth
2/ As a knife, using the edge can cut most solid foods into managable pieces. Ok with the exception of meat almost anything can be done this way.
3/ As a fork can just substitute it by scooping mouth size pieces

i would go with knife but....
the spoon is actually the best utensil because it can do all the other jobs..
it can cut food on the edge of the spoon rim.
it can also act like a fork because first it will cut the food and then be picked up. go the spoon

Spoon. You can do the most with a spoon. If you need to cut something, use the side of the spoon. A fork would not work for say picking up a pea. A spoon can scoop anything.

Take soup as an example. You cannot eat with a knife, nor fork, but you can with a spoon. It must be a spoon. You can even, if you press hard enough cut meat with a spoon. The spoon rules.

Assuming that we are only referring to utensils in their use for preparing and eating food and not as a non-dining forest survival tool ...
I have to say spoon. The edge of a spoon can in fact cut through most food things, such as meat and cheese and bread, when pressure is applied - better than with a fork due to the angles you can hold the spoon. It is able to pick up food that a fork can pick up. It can pick up small things and round things and liquids. You can scoop dairy and produce with it as well.

Spoons rule. You can do almost anything with a spoon. Stir with it. Eat your peas, and your soup. Even kinda cut with it.
Of course, now we need to decide which spoon we need. A little iced tea spoon with long handle and tiny bowl? A teaspoon? A soup spoon? A sugar spoon? A tablespoon? A slotted vegetable spoon? Or even the teeny weeny spoon that sits in a tiny salt dish?

It depends on what you want to eat, dummy. That's why we have all of them. Did you ever try to eat peas with a knife? They're very hard to balance and dipping your knife in honey in order to make them stick makes them taste kind of funny. You need a spoon for that. But did you ever try to stab a piece of meat with a spoon? Can you cut your meat with the back of a spoon? It doesn't work, you need a fork and a knife for that. How about eating soup with a fork? Do you have four hours to spare for lunch? The one best all purpose utensil would be a spork with serrated edges, although if you're not careful, you could accidentally widen your mouth a little.
"I eat my peas with honey.
I've done it all my life.
It makes them taste quite funny
But it keeps them on my knife."

The knife has so many more uses for it other than for purposes of eating. In terms of food- you can cut things with it, stab it, eat with it (carefully!), it makes it easier to portion things out. Also, if you have a knife, you can use it for other handy dandy things! One thing I noticed one of my Uncles do (while gross at times) is he uses his knife as a toothpick! In fact, just this week I used a knife to pry open my CD player!
All in all, I find the knife to be my handiest utensil out of the bunch...
Though really, you can't beat the logic of a spork either, but that is a story for another time!

properly to me it might want to be the knife and fork because the knife is taken under consideration necessary for cuttign issues that you're eating and without the fork you does no longer quite have the means to carry close the food and p.c.. it up.
