If a medicine says don't take with alcohol, what does that really mean. Don't wash it down with alcohol? How long after taking a medicine is it safe to drink? Also, if a medicine doesn't have that warning label on it, would it be okay to drink the next day after taking it?

OK, someone answer the actual question. The medicine is Allegra, but that's beside the point.

Typically, that warning is because the alcohol will exacerbate the effects of the drug. It does not always mean that you cannot drink with the medication, but that if you do, it will enhance the drug and make you "high". Most people like this effect and as long as you are not driving, it may be OK. But, on the other hand it might not be, depending upon the drug.

It means it could have a serious side effect like making you very drowsy or even put you in a coma, also drugs containing acetaminophen can damage your liver when taken with alcohol. Unless otherwise specified I would say it would be Ok to drink the day after you were off the drug.

Allegra with alcohol, the alcohol can increase the effect of drowsiness.

Some medicines, the alcohol will diminish the effects. Others, it will make liver damage worse. Others, it will increase the effect - like drowsiness. The best thing to do is call a 24 hour pharmacy and ask the pharmacist about your specific drug.

I'll drink to that!
