Because it is a profession that we all interact with. And because of that interaction, we all have some curiosity about the people in the white lab coats that help heal us, give us medical orders, and at some point may pronounce our demise.
Seeing so many of these shows on television helps to humanize these super-human entities, and allows us to reconnect with medical professionals by humanizing them vicariously.

LOL. I find it funny you directed this Q to atheists. Personally I like House and ER. You forgot about all the law/police shows. I mean come on, there are tons of Law & Order, plus all the other shows.

How would I know? More dramatic, maybe? I'm a CSI person, myself. Nobody wants to watch a show about a boring profession. A series about a worker at McDonald's wouldn't last long.

There's plenty of who-done-it's. Imean you have:
Magnum P I- private eye
Simon and Simon-private eyes
Murder, She Wrote-author
Perry Mason-lawyer
Ellery Queen-Private eye
Matlock-lawyer
And so many others that I didn't mention, but no I never thought about it, I would rather watch the who-done-its. But you see, there was plenty of lawyers and private eyes.

Comes and goes. Crime investigation is hot right now too. Neither were in the 80s-90s but they were in the 70s. It is just fads.
