The problem with the religious perspective is that it squanders the meaning of your time on earth. Many religious people believe that this is the "meaning" of their lives right now:

"If I am good while on earth, then when I die I will go to heaven where the streets are paved with gold and I will live with God in the lap of luxury and have absolutely anything I want or need for eternity! My time here on earth is a mere nanosecond compared to eternity. I just have to tough it out here for a nanosecond to get my infinite reward."

In this scenario, your nanosecond on earth pretty much has no meaning -- the whole goal is "heaven."

Think about where this sort of thinking can lead:

* Example #1 - This sort of thinking can be seen in the actions of Islamic suicide bombers. They believe that, by blowing themselves (and others) up, they will be given as their reward a place in heaven with 72 virgins to satisfy their every whim.

Example #2 - The power of religion to completely warp the human mind can also be seen in a cult known as "Heaven's Gate." In 1997, 39 members of this cult all committed suicide together. Why? Because their religion taught them that by dying they would be transported to a space ship traveling near the Hale-Bopp comet. [ref] The meaning of their lives was wrapped up in this ridiculous fairy tale, to the extent that they would voluntarily and peacefully commit suicide.

This sort of thinking is fascinating. We all know that suicide bombers do not get entertained for eternity by 72 virgins. And we all know that the members of Heaven's Gate were not transported to a space ship by killing themselves. These two fantasies are obviously absurd. Yet billions of Christians believe that they are going to heaven. Christians for some reason believe that their fantasy is true, when in fact all three of these beliefs are equally imaginary. These three beliefs also show how cancerous religion can be. Instead of focusing on the here and now, religion focuses on an imaginary place and time that is a total fabrication.

You are right. I've also found that it tends to make very strict religious people suffer depression. They don't know how to enjoy the everyday. It's just 'putting in time' and seeing life as 'tests and temptation by evil'. Living for alot of expectations from the religion and it's followers. Leads to self righteousness and being judgmental. This is the fault of organized religion. Which is different than spirituality.....and even what Jesus taught.

Don't confuse Islam with Christianity. Christians don't believe in a Heaven with 72 virgins or any of that. We also don't believe you get to Heaven by good works alone. These suicide car bombers a good example of why Islam is a fake religion.

People can call us Christians "Jesus freaks" but I don't really understand why everyone is so upset. Christians strive to be good people and we go to church and believe in Jesus. As long as we're trying to be good doing people, why should that bother everyone?

You are ignorant of the Christian experience. Christianism is not imaginary, but real, and the evidence shows that.

And not only religious people think the "nanosecond" has no meaning. Some philosophers, like the existentialists, think alike. Are you ignorant of that, too??

Religion really poisons everything: it makes people thinks really weird things: like there is an invisible man in to sky, who watches you every day and every minute and who sends the hell unbaptized children but saves the worst sinners just if they repent at the last minute. You need to be insane to believe such nonsense.

If christians practice religion then you are right and they are no better than muslims or other religions. But when they practice a relationship with Jesus it is a whole new scenario. Religion is man made traditions. Jesus is the way,the truth, and the life. I challenge you to read the gospels in the bible and see what Jesus reveals to you. Jesus is real and He will prove it if you will let Him. I will prove this to you by revealing what is in your heart. Are you ready? Now I don't know you right? We have never met, right? Okay. Your mouth speaks what is in your heart. Your question was 'Why religion is poison?' That is what is in your heart. -poison- That is why you need Jesus to cleanse you. Will you trust me now?

False religion has spread this poison not the one true religion. And there is only one true religion no matter how many people may whine about it. False religion has been around since the fall of man and Satan has done his best to blind the minds of the unbelievers. Christendom is part of this false religion, God calls it Babylon the Great, and soon God is going to have them all destroyed.

Well, heaven is not a place for "good" people- it is for those who have a relationship with God through accepting Christ. So the goal of your actions is not heaven- our actions are a reflection of what is important to us (which is our relationship with God). The poison is human created religion that encourages sinful acts such as murder

I agree that religion is something else. But it's always good to believe in the right things and you have to be sure that what you think is right is right. I do feel that Jesus came to this earth and he will return one day. I look forward to his return but at the same time. i know that I am no perfect human and I also know that first thier will be very difficult times beofre the comming of the Lord. Also I feel that good is good and bad is bad. We all know that blowing ones self up is no way to get to heaven and my God having a million virgins couldn't make me light a bomb under my tail. I was a virgin once myself before my husband came and it doesn't take long to not be a virgin. I'm no longer married anymore and I'm no virgin either. I still have my virgin ways though. I don't sleep around and I like to be a nice lady. This is something I believe in. This is not a religion. It's the right thing to do. Jesus always ask his people to be fishers of men. How one does this is to be a good example. when you make a mistake admit it and then move on. We are only human and we are going to make mistakes. But we have to walk like Jesus walked. Jesus did not teach of a certain religion. Jesus did not teach in a big fancy church. Jesus was a poor man and he went out among the sick and the least likely people that most people wouldn't want to be around. This was how Jesus taught us to be. It is not the rich man that needs help and it is not the pridefull man that needs the most help. Jesus wanted us to go out and reach out to the poor in spirit. Minister to the sick. Jesus ask us to be fishermen of Man. Jesus did not look at the color of skin or the place where the man lived. Jesus asked us to love eachother no matter what. Jesus did not focus on a ceratin religion. Jesus knew who he was and where he came from. the jews where confused by Jesus because they could not understand why he claimed to be God and then he was Jesus. They tested him and asked Jesus are you God and Jesus told them that nothing. All Jesus said was if you had of know me then you would have know God. This is why the Jews wanted to stone Jesus because they thought he was claiming to be God. When Jesus was killed over his head a sign read " King of The Jews" Yes Jesus was the King of the Jews, his chosen people but, now that he has shed his blood then we are all his chosen people. And he is the Lord of Lord and King of Kings. Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega. Jesus came to save everyone, if they would listen to him then they will be saved one day for it is written in God's word. And God's word will never be changed. Not by man or anyone. So I agree that religion does make people act all stupid. We need to just learn to walk in the way Jesus walked while he was here on this earth. Life will not be easy and it was not easy for Jesus because he was put to death, made fun of and mocked, although he did miricles and healed the sick. Jesus was not believed to be the savior while he was here on this earth. It tells us in the Bible that a prophet will not be recognized in his own land and this was the case with Jesus. Jesu ask us to do the ultimate thing in this life. That is to try to live a good life. We all know what is right and what is wrong. It's always best to choose right over wrong even when it is hard sometimes. Because as humnas we sometimes want to get those back that have hurt us or harmed us. But we have to do what Jesus did and turn the other cheek. I know this is all hard to do. But for us to be a peacefull earth and live long good lifes then we must continue to try to live the way Jesus ived his life on this earth. and as far as heaven. Don't worry about all that while we are here on this earth. Because God knew us before we was born and he knows who we are and where we will go one day when this time on earth is done with. God has our life in his hands. Now will God step in and stop all the bad right now. I just don't think he works that way. But you can bet if you wanted to then he can do anything he chooses to do because this earth is his and so are we his people. The good and the bad are his also. We should not worry about where we will go when we leave this earth because God has it planned already. God had a plan for you and me before we was ever born into this world. God Bless You and I do hope to go to heaven one day and I want to see you there to.
