I know that Mormons are forbidden from drinking alcoholic beverages. Some Mormon friends of mine are having a pitch in dinner, with Italian food as a theme. My favorite lasagna recipe calls for a fourth cup of wine. Would this be acceptable?

Also, any issues with seafood?

Using alcohol in cooking is perfectly ok because alcohol evaporates at a very low temp so in pretty much any dish where the alcohol will be cooked it will be evaporated out and all that will be left is the taste of the other ingredients in the wine.

I have used wine many times in dishes. I must say that I do feel a bit weird buying the wine though. Like I would have to explain myself if people I knew saw me buying it, lol. But that is just my little paranoia.

I just had shrimp tonight so I hope there is no issues with seafood.

There are no forbidden foods. There are drinks we are suppose to stay away from like coffee, tea and alcohol. No tobacco. No narcotic type drugs unless they are prescribed by a doctor.

Suppose to eat red meat sparingly but it isnt forbidden and most people dont tend to remember this little word of wisdom gem judging by how much steak I see eaten at bbqs, lol.

My mom is a mormon, and even though the alcohol cooks out, she would always use a substitute whenever she used a recipe that called for wine. So I guess it depends on the individual, although I suspect that the reason she would never use wine in recipe has more to do with the fact that she didn't want to buy wine at the store or have any in the house. So I think it would be alright if you are just contributing the lasagna to a dinner, and there's really no need to bring it up as the lasagna won't actually have any alcohol in it after it is cooked.

Ethanol (Alcohol) evaporates at 175ºF. You will never have 100% of the alcohol evaporated, but you can get it as low as 2% (of the alcohol). Since the alcohol added to the food usually takes up no more than 5% of the total volume, that 2% will then probably constitute about 0.001% - 0.005% of the actual food. I don't see many Mormons being upset by such a low quantity.

Since the average human liver (of standard height, weight, and age) takes about 1 hour to process 1 ounce of 45% alcohol, it would take less than a minute to process the alcohol for 1 ounce of your food. Essentially: even an 80 pound female who has never taken a drink in her life would not have any intoxicating effect whatsoever.

Nyquil has more alcohol in it and I've yet to hear a talk prompting the saints to abstain from it.

Out of courtesy you may want to let them know. The average person doesn't study organic chemistry and so would just see "alcohol as alcohol".

I've eaten things that were cooked with wine. It's very good. I personally don't see why they would have a problem with it. Alcohol evaporates at a very low temperature.

In dealing with other Mormons, it's always "To each their own." If you're uncertain about the host's standards, you could always call them. They'll appreciate the jester.

I have heard many Mormons say that they do eat food cooked with alcohol, as the alcohol is burned away.

You can read the entire Word of Wisdome where our "dietary laws" It's the 89th section of the Doctrine & Covenants.

Yeah it really depends on the person, but usually most people are OK with it because it evaporates the alcohol when you cook it. You could ask them or you could just make it and tell them that you cooked it with wine.

Yes it would be acceptable(the alcohol cooks out)

But I want you to know, that we are not forbidden by the church to do(or not to do) anything. We can follow or break the word of wisdom(the scriptures that say not to drink "strong drinks", use tobacco, etc.). So you could even serve absinthe to them(although it's illegal) if they wanted to, they could drink...but of course they shouldn't.

As the other people have answered the alcohol burns out so it is ok. You might want to ask your friends to see how they feel.
