Stock car does not refer to the parts of the car but rather the shape of the car. Stock car racing started with moonshiners racing their modified cars when they were not running moonshine. It was important to them that the cars look just like any car but be able to go much faster. This was so that cops couldn't easily identify the cars of runners. It all goes back to the airplane pilots and mechanics that came back from WWI and WWII modifying parts has a hobby. Other types of racing came from part-tinkers designing different types of cars and the moonshiners got with them for the parts that would fit in 'stock' cars.

There are no "stock" parts on the cars now. When NASCAR first began, it began with the intention of using the competition as a way to sell its production cars (the cars you and I buy at the store). The best example of this was the 1970 Plymouth Superbird that Richard Petty drove for exactly one season. They made 200 of these, because that was the minimum number you had to have made to use it in NASCAR. Some time in the late 1980's began where the cars are like they are now, to say that the cars began using racing-specific parts, not actual normal production car parts.

You notice how even you, use quotation marks on the term Stock Car? I just capitalize it it outta respect. Stock Car racing is a term that was originated out of racing stock automobiles. Out of the evolution of this type of racing, the modifications have become so advanced as to see the cars that they use today. The latest link in Stock Car evolution has been the Car Of Tomorrow. So since Stock Car racings birth to todays NASCAR the car has been morphed into a machine that resembles nothing of a stock automobile, but the mutation of its evolution into what it is today.

Stock cars stopped being stock after the modern era begain in the 70's.
Now stock per-say is only in shape of the car.
The old school was stock cars from Detroit.Today they are stack in appearence.

It's just called "stock car racing" because at one time, that's
what it was. Due to safety concerns and aerodynamic
equalization, very little on the car is stock any more.

Since you asked this in the NASCAR section, I take it that you mean no stock parts on a NASCAR NNC car.
Actually, that statement is wrong. The hood skin, the roof, and the trunk lid are all stock parts.
The rest of the body, most of the suspension, and the chassis are hand-made. All of the engine parts, rear ends, and everything else on the car are aftermarket.

when they speak of stock car racing it is because they use the majority of car parts from the manufacture of which the car represents "oem" (original equipment manufacture)
