It's important to know that from birth to the first 5 years is when a child's brain develops the most, it's a period of time when the brain starts making synapses. A baby is born with almost all of it's neurons but nearly no connections between them. The first few years of baby's life will be spent making these connections, synapses, between the neurons. With each new experience a stronger connection is made, repeating the experience strengthens the synapse even more. What you should remember is that the only synapses that will remain in the brain are those that are stimulated. The rest are lost forever. Help your child stimulate his/her brain through experiences...new sights, sounds, textures, tastes... do it as soon as they are born! You can even do this when you are pregnant. Read to your stomach or play differnt types of music...etc. Hope this helps.

Babies start learning the day that they are born. As soon as they begin to be stimulated by their senses, then learning takes off like crazy. That is why it is so important to start them off early reading, listening to music and so on. Read to your baby when they are still too young to even talk. Stimulate them with different kinds of music (not overly loud of course) count their toes and fingers, point at stuff and say what it is called. They are like little sponges and the earlier you begin paying attention to their learning needs, the smarter they will be and the quicker they will develop.

I would say soon after conception. The eye is an extension of the brain, and it's there early on. They are born recognizing their mothers and close family members voices.

During the first trimester! Wow, I can't believe people think babies' brains don't start developing until the last trimester or later - why do you think expectant mothers take folic acid supplements?!
