Here is an excerpt from that article.

The transcript published by the Jerusalem Post bore scant resemblance to the one that in 1967 rolled off the teletype machine behind the sealed vault door at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, where Steve Forslund worked as an intelligence analyst for the 544th Air Reconnaissance Technical Wing, then the highest-level strategic planning office in the Air Force.

"The ground control station stated that the target was American and for the aircraft to confirm it," Forslund recalled. "The aircraft did confirm the identity of the target as American, by the American flag.

"The ground control station ordered the aircraft to attack and sink the target and ensure they left no survivors."

My answer from a previous post:

The attack on the USS Liberty was a deliberate assault by the Israelis on a US flagged warship sailing in international waters.

The Israelis knew the Liberty was a US intelligence ship, and feared that the US would detect plans for their invasion of Syria. They were very obviously doing everything they could to sink the ship and in so doing, eliminate the evidence of who did it.

During the battle, radio traffic was recorded that clearly showed that the Israeli pilots knew it was an American ship. All records were ordered destroyed by the White House to cover up the attack. Eye witnesses of high credibility swore that they heard the damning communications between the Israeli pilots and their commanders

The "mistake" was no mistake at all. The US and the Israeli's hushed it up for fear of the bad press in a time of war. It was one of the most shameful acts the Israeli govt ever perpetrated on it's best and sometimes only ally.

To a man, everyone on board the USS Liberty insisted the Israeli's knew they were attacking a lightly armed US warship. The Israeli's only broke off the attack when a high ranking naval officer aboard a nearby US Aircraft Carrier radioed in the clear (an uncoded voice transmission) to responding US Naval aviators to shoot down anything flying around the Liberty. Only then did the Israelis break off the attack and retreat.

Captain William L. McGonagle was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions that day to save the Liberty and her crew. In the ultimate insult, it was not the President of the United States who placed the nation's highest military award around his neck, but a Naval bureaucrat.

Shame knows no bounds here.

What cover up? there was an inquiry years ago, the findings were published, it was very tragic, but it was years ago, but things like this happen.

With regards a cover up, claims are being made that the radio transcripts were ordered to be destroyed by the White House, the Israelis still have the originals, as no doubt do the British from their Radio Interception Facility based in Cyprus.

Most of todays serving U.S. Military personel were not even in the force then and the U.S. Government you alude too is not the same one as in power today!!

Dragging up 40 year old stories wont bring back the sailors who lost their lives, if it has personnel family interest to you, then I would suggest some form of counseling to help.

If you are just posting to stir anti-Israeli feelings then you DO need some form of counselling.
