any ideas why?

ear mites .. sounds as if it is a bad infection.. you will need to clean the cats ear with cotton buds daily.. do not go too far into the ear canal.. regular ear drops from your local pet store will clear up ear mites.. you will have to use the drops twice daily for about 3 weeks.. ear mites can only be cleared by drowning them.
if your cats ear smells offensive then he could have an ear infection as well as the mites .. you will have to take him to the vets for antibotic ear drops.

a good spot on treatment like stronghold or advacte used monthly (obtainable from the vets) will prevent any reinfection and will also cover him against fleas and worms..

probably has ear mites, take the kit to the vet and get some ear mite medication (drops) should clear up and no more clicks

Not a clue, best to call the vet and see what he has to say. There may be an insect trapped in there (*shudder*) or an injury of some sort. Get him into the vet. :-)

you should check for ear mites. take a q-tip with baby oil on it and swab his ears if black chunks come out he may have mites.
