I've been on a few snipe hunts, on the giving end rather than the receiving end.
One notable hunt was back in high school. One of my classmates had an obnoxious cousin from Birmingham visiting. We took the city boy out in the middle of the swamp and left him there with a gunny sack, and went back to camp.
Three or four hours later, he came into camp scratched and torn to a fair-thee-well. We all laughed our butts off. I don't think any of us noticed that he had one hand behind his back. He walked over to where his cousin was literally rolling with laughter on his sleeping bag. Then the city boy brought out a quart mason jar, unscrewed the lid and poured a quart of fire ants on his cousin.
We all laughed harder, and when the small town cousin got most of the ants off, they had as good a fight as I've ever seen. After that, the city boy was not quite so much of a PIA, and we quit pulling tricks on him.
Thanks for reminding me of that incident.

How funny. I had never heard of snipe hunting until my husband talked our 7 year old daughter into it. In fact, I initially wanted to go try it too (he stopped me, which surprises me because he LOVES to watch me make a fool of myself). I thought he had made up the whole thing, and then I found out that our daughter wasn't the only victim of this scheme. We took a couple of pictures of her running around in the dark with the flashlight and the bag, and they're priceless. She was pretty disappointed she never caught one, but there will be plenty more summer nights... until she figures it out...

Yeah, that was part of our initiation for new boy scouts - snipe hunting and they had to go get plaid paint and a left handed smoke shifter from the troops next door.

Every child should experience at least one snipe hunt in their life. I held the bag & the flashlight when i was 9 yrs old. When i was 10 yrs old i was the chaser ;-)
