Linux is an operating system. So it runs Linux games just fine. There are some programs which can be used (such as WINE) which will try to run Windows or Mac games but you never know if it will work or not. You might want to search for some of your favorite games with the word wine to see if people have gotten them to run. Such as, doing a search on
world warcraft wine linux
comes up with lots of pages saying how to do it so the answer there would be Yes.

to improve your chances you might want to choose a linux that is more "toys" involved than the server versions. Such as RedHat or Ubuntu

There is one distro that was specifically developed for games. I don't know how it works with online - but it should be worth a try. The disk is buried upstairs amongst many others, so I will let you do the google search to figure out the name. Sorry.
