I'm helping in a story for my journalism class at school! The story is for the school newspaper and it is going to be on the greenhouse effect and what teens can do to help stop it! I need some help with it though so any suggestions you can give me would help!
I need simple ways teens can help. You know, things they can actually do! I live in the LA area so it's a city place, hopefully that small factor can help with suggestion making!! hahaa!!
Thank You!
=)

There are some very simple things that everyone can do to help stop global warming:

· Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Use fluorescent bulbs in your room.

· Turn off your computer or the TV when you’re not using it. Unplug chargers when not in use.

· Wait until you have a lot of clothes to wash before using the washing machine. Don’t use the machine for one item just because it’s your favorite shirt.

· Take shorter showers. Heating water uses energy.

· Close the blinds on a hot day if the sun is shining in. Dress lightly instead of turning up the air conditioning. Or use a fan.

· Dress warmly when it’s cold, instead of turning up the heat.

· Offer to help your parents keep the air filters on your AC and furnace clean.

· Walk short distances instead of asking for a ride in a car.

· Plant a tree.

· Learn more about global warming so you can talk to people about it. See: Could it really happen? or Global Warming Basics.

Please, for the love of god, don't listen to the people who think global warming is fake. I suspect you know that the greenhouse effect is when some of the light and heat from the sun that bounces off the earth is reflected back to the earth, essentially creating a bubble of warmth inside the atmosphere. Global warming is caused by an unnatural accelerated buildup of gases like carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This causes more energy than normal to be reflected back and remain inside the Earth's atmosphere, causing an unnatural rise in temperature. Yes, the Earth goes through cycles of warmer and colder periods, but what's been happening over the past 200 years is straying away from the natural cycles of the past 4 billion years. There is absolutely no debate, global warming is happening.

Campaigning to have the government make a law requiring all new power plants use low emission technologies would be a good start. If anyone says that nothing that doesn't emit much CO2 is ready yet just point to nuclear fission which already provides a significant proportion of the worlds energy (many times more than wind and solar combined) reliably and with essentially no CO2 emissions (along with better safety than wind power).

There isn't really that much that an individual can do, unless it involves working in science or technology.

Unlike most people here who says leave computers on standby mode I disagree. never leave them on standby mode . switch them off. The UK alone can save upto 500 million tonnes annually by turning electrical appliances off. I don't know how much LA can save. Use eco-friendly items. no deosprays that contains CFC's or methane. always check for the fsc signs on timber to know that they have come from a properly managed forests and not an illegal source. Campaign against the govt. to introduce more greener ways of living. walk, cycle or skate instead of using cars. and always obey the traffic law.

I’m not too sure you want to stop it!

Without the greenhouse effect the temperature of planet Earth would be around 20°C lower, and we’d all be dead.

Ride a bicycle instead of driving. Carpool. Take a bus instead of riding a car.

Use rechargeable batteries. Run to work. Turn off lights when you aren't using them. Put your computer on standby when it's not being used.

Nag your parents to conver the whole house to solar power.

you can save the environment by...

1. buy reusable bags and take them with you when you go to
the store.

2. buy compact flourescent light bulbs (cfls). they use one fourth
of the energy that incandescents use .

3. look for appliances with the energy star label.

4. buy cars with at least a 35 mile per gallon. (the average car causes
just as produces just as much co2 emissions as the average home)

5. buy recycled paper.

6.spread the word. encourage as much people as you can to do these things.
