puppies are 5 weeks old. they are full blooded with no papers. the woman never had tails docked b/c they are free. is it to late to do their tails on our own or do we need to take them to the vet? if we did it, how would it be for the puppy at that age?

DO NOT DO IT!!!
At this age, it's like getting a limb cut off! Plus more bleeding....

BAD, BAD IDEA!!!! Never attempt to do tails on your own even at the proper age!

Hmmm ... I would think at this stage that would be done like more like an amputation as if the tail were damaged beyond repair. DO NOT attempt to dock a tail yourself at this age. A vet might do it, but definitely, do not do it yourself. At a day or so old the tails are so small that a lot of experienced breeders can dock tails or remove dewclaws themselves. It's a whole different ballgame now.

You don't say what breed this is, but a lot of people keep tails and ears natural, so I personally wouldn't really worry about doing it, since they are obviously not show puppies.

OMG, don't even think about doing tails yourself now.. It is far too late to do tails now.. You have to get the vet to do them IF they need to be done.. It is no longer tail docking.. it is AMPUTATION.. There is A LOT of blood, far longer healing time.. far more chance of infection, and the whole thing is a bad idea.. If you do the tails yourself now, you are going to end up at the vet anyhow with a huge vet bill trying to fix your mistake.. Don't do it.. Please!

Please don't do it yourself. His sensory abilities are so much more developed than they were at birth at this point, and it would cause him so much pain! If his tail needs to be docked then a vet could give him the meds and anesthesia he needs to make him comfortable during the procedure. It would horrible for him to be in the pain of an at-home docking, and I think that when you saw it it would trouble you too. If you insist that he has to have his tail docked, please take him to your vet.

Too late. It would be very painful... I don't think a good vet would even do it at this point... it would become a very major surgery now. I suggest you just leave them be. If they have no papers they can't be shown, and that's the only reason you'd "have" to dock them anyway. Plenty of pet quality dogs no longer have their ears and tails done. They'll be fine.

I wouldn't dock his tail at all. If you have no papers you can't show him so why does his tail need to be docked. And get him neutered because any pups he sires will not be able to be registered. Whatever you do, do not dock his tail yourself. At his age he will need anesthesia, stitches and antibiotics for this type of surgery. The risks of something going wrong aren't worth a short tail and who needs vet bills for this?

At this age it is considered major surgery to dock a dog's tail, and should only be done if absolutely medically necessary.

Enjoy your dog, tail and all.

Please do not maim your pups !!! Tail docking and ear cropping are quickly going by the wayside, thank goodness.
Dogs that used to suffer this mutilation are now being shown in the natural state in a lot of dog shows.
Longer ears are meant to keep out dust, dirt, wind, etc.Tails are used for balance, you know, like a rudder.
Breeds that have naturally open and erect ears have more hair in the ear to protect them.
Please re-consider what you are thinking of doing.
Dogs are ever so much more beautiful if left natural.

They are too old to have their tails docked..The blood supply and nerve supply is far more developed at this age. It would not only be extremely painful for them, it could also be potentially fatal if the bleeding is not controlled. I would just leave the tails if I were you, they are cuter with tails anyway :)

too old to do it yourself. it will bleed ALOT and have to have stitches. why do it anyway there is no medical reason for it. if it doesn't have papers you can't breed it and sell puppies or anything so why does it matter what it looks like. i was a vet assistant for several years and i had to hold those poor little puppies while they did it. it is very painful they wriggle around to get away and they bleed a ton. everytime i had to do it i would always say to the vet, "you know i only do this because you make me. I hate that i have to."
