Is this something you want or is it as a play companion for the Rott? Obviously, whatever you pickout you would want the input of your Rott if you want a compatible situation and a safe one.

We adopt out to many folks who already have pets and it is vital that the current pets accept the new comer to the home. It is not really about what breed. It is about personality and temperament of 2 dogs that are going to be together. I highly suggest you look for a rescue in your area that will allow you and your Rott to come visit and meet dogs for adoption. They may have a play area where you and the Rott can play and interact with different dogs until you both find a good "match" for the whole family. This could avoid possible mis-match and a bad situation if the dogs don't like each other. What dog you might think is "cute with a Rott" might turn into a disaster. You may have a sweetheart of a Rottie but they are big and could injure a smaller dog while just playing around. You need to consider all these things before aquiring a new comer.

First of all to King tootin, that is a most idiotic thing to say!!! You obviously don't know dogs well at all. Okay to answer your question... First it depends on the age of the rottie, and his or her activity level. If your rottie is very active and loves to chase, I would suggest maybe a Jack Russell. They are a little high strung, with a high activity level, and usually have enough personality to keep even a rottie in line, in case rottie plays a little too rough sometime. If your rottie is more of a mellowed out, calm type, I honestly would suggest maybe going to the pound or shelter and getting a mutt. They are usually always cute, and often a little mellower than a purebred. Most terriers have a high enegy level, so keep that in mind. Also most terriers are highly intelligent, and learn very quickly. Dachsunds are great but tend to bark a lot. I think a beagle would probably be a good choice. There are different sizes, they have short hair, are very smart, and a little more on the quiet side, although from time to time they will bark. In my experience with beagles, I have liked them because they aren't really yappy. The yapping kind of gets to me after a while.

Depends, is it going to be an outdoor dog, or an indoor dog with access to a small yard?

If it's an indoor dog, try a Boston Terrier. They're tough little dogs, they can definitely hold their own with a Rottie. They can't live outdoors though, they're not built for it. I can't reccommend any small breed dogs to live outdoors, smaller dogs just can't survive the elements the same way a larger dog could.

Is it going to live outside? Short haired dogs shouldn't live outside, unless you're in a warm climate.A good companion, though, would be a Beagle. They get along with other dogs, but they're sturdy enough to roughhouse with a Rotty, and they're really cute. They aren't quiet, though!

Are you serious? Dont do it. Rotts are killers. You;ll find your little dog dead, torn to shreds some day.
