Well, first of all, you shoulf get some flea medication from your vet. Also, get something for your carpet as well that will make the fleas go away. They also carry that at vets.

Keeping your pet on a monthly prevention from your vet year round will prevent flea infestation. Keep in mind that if you have a heavy infestation it make take 90 days to get the situation under control. Use capstar to suplement the topical flea prevention in the mean time. Vaccum the house well and throw away the bag then also treat the yard. Your vet can tell you which preventatives would be best for your pet.

Frontline or advantix. If your pet is heavly infested i would suggest going to your vet and picking up a Capstar pill. Its about $5 and will kill every living flea on your pet for 24 hours. This will help to give your flea prevention that you need to start on (frontline) a good starter boost. Also remember not to give your dog a bath two to three days before or after applying the frontline. This way it has a chance to spread over the dog fully.

What they said - use a treatment from your vets. Don't bother with anything from a store, it doesn't work. Frontline Plus is great, just make sure it gets on your dog's skin and not his fur. Don't bother bathing him either, baths are for dirt, not fleas. And if you bath within 48 hours before or after applying Frontline, or it won't work.
You should also treat your house, because that's where 95% of the fleas are living. Get a spray from a vets, like Indorex, Acclaim, Staykil or Skoosh.

I know just the thing. We have this problem all the time with my dog. What you have to do is give you dog a bath with LEMON dish soap, wait 3 day then put the frontline on your dog and it should do the trick. WARNING: Do not use HEARTS flea stuff. My cats had a HORRIBLE reaction to it.
