The purpose of a sacred circle is not primarily one of protection. Its purpose is to mark off sacred space from mundane space, and also to preserve the energies that are being raised within it which will be directed towards whatever spellwork you happen to be doing.

Also, the term "circle" is a bit misleading. The actual form of the temple of energy you are creating is a sphere; the circle on the floor or ground just happens to mark its intersection with the surface you are standing on.

As I was taught, one starts to create sacred space at the eastern edge of the space you have purified, moving in a clockwise direction. In Wicca we often use the athame (sacred blade), pointed at the ground, while visualizing the energies coalescing and focussed where we are pointing. After the rite is ended, we "take up" the circle, starting in the east and walking counter-clockwise while visualizing the energies that form the sphere dissipating.

Hope this helps.

There are a variety of ways to cast a circle. In short, it's a projection of energy around your working space.

Wiccans generally use circles to contain energy during spellwork, so that it can build up and be released all at once in a focused direction. Sometime circles are also used as protection against outside forces disrupting or tainting a magical or religious working. Wiccans most commonly use circles in a religious context, consecrating and purifying an area before religious ritual.

I am also a Wiccan and I cast 'circles'. Sometimes it is for protection but more often it is to hold the energy that is raised during ritual. I seldom cast a circle for simple spellwork.

Wiccans cast circles often for spell work, ritual work etc.

Get ye to borders and by a 101 type book on Wicca and/or witchcraft and it will describe it in detail.

YOu don't need one for a spell. but that depends on the spell, the person and all sorts of things.
