Your best bet would be to join a department that has 12 hour shifts. This means more days off, and more time for training.

Most 12 hour shifts, you get one day off for every one you work. The most popular in law enforcement are 3 on/3 off, 4 on/ 4 off, or 2-2-3. Two on, two off, three on the first week, two off, two on, three off the next week.

You should get a good cardio in with your SWAT training to supplement anything else you are doing.

Part time SWAT teams train on an average of 8 to 16 hours a month. This time is most often a part of the regular 40 hour work week. In some cases, it is overtime. Full time teams train and work 40 hours a week inclusive.

Either way, you will have plenty of time to train in mixed martial arts on your off time just like every other regular working person.

I'm sure there are exceptions, but the 'average' police officer works 40 hours a week like most other jobs. That would give you as much time to train as the average person in another job. I don't know what MMA is, so I can't comment on how much time it requires.

If MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts, then yes you can find the time to train. We have an officer in my department who does that. Its all about proper time management.

I would assume that this primarily depends on the department or agency that employs you. At my agency once an officer is hired, they are placed on 12 months of probation. This probation period is to ensure the newly hired officer is made for the job. The new officer is paired with a senior officer for on the job training. After the probationary period is over, that officer is allowed to apply for assignments. Traditionally, there are try-outs but it depends hugely on the team members. They have to trust you as an officer as well as your ability. This trust usually takes years to prove.
