If someone (like a contractor) has quoted you a mil to do the kitchen......run......very very quickly in the opposite direction, and do not look back !!!!
What kitchen could possibly cost a million dollars, unless it was coated in 24 K gold and encrusted with diamonds!!

That seems more like a budget for a restuarant kitchen than someone's home. And since we spent less than $300 redecorating it a couple of years ago, I can't see that happening. Course if you want to give someone that money I have a basement that needs fixing up. lol

nope. i'd resurface all the tiles / splashback white and the counter tops resurface with black stone. Sand back the doors and either paint or stain them. Add new door handles. New appliances if necessary. Then accentuate all the kitchen accessories such as tea-towels, pots, mixer, toaster in really great color - like a cool aqua blue or hot red.
Crisp white - add any color decor you like.

i wouldn't. the thing is, i live in an area that wouldn't support a million dollar reno. I'd lose $ when I sell my house.
might think about $20K, though. I could do a really nice job with that much, and I'd get it all back when I sell.

I'd pay off my parent's house and purchase some land and build a house on my property.
