i have some old leather from ww1, from a cavalry officer consisting of mainly straps and the leather strap on an old military helmet. i was wondering if there was any procedures i could use to preserve/clean up the leather, its getting fragile and defiantly not in any sort of good condition.

Historic leather restoration is best left to the experts as modern techniques and products may ruin the leather or even destroy it.

Find an antique leather restorer and take it to them.

DO NOT use any penetrating oil like WD40 while it will soften it also eats the leather, saddle soap with time and patience works best.
