Pseudoephedrine is the drug in medications like Sudafed and its generic equivalents. It is also in some formulations of Tylenol, Advil, Mucinex, and other brand names that are formulated for relief of colds and sinus pressure. Pseudoephedrine is a very effective nasal decongestant, but it can have other effects in the body, including a tendency to keep you awake (unlike Benadryl, which makes you drowsy.)

Because pseudoephedrine is chemically very similar to the stimulant ephedrine, many people have misued it by using it as one of the starting materials for cooking meth. In response, the federal government highly restricted over-the-counter sales of all medicines containing pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine is still available without a prescription, but only by asking at the pharmacy window and by providing acceptable photo identification. Each customer's pseudoephedrine purchases are tracked and limited (for example, no more than 3 boxes a month, depending on the strength) to make it less likely that anyone could buy enough to be useful in making meth.

Many over-the-counter medications that used to contain pseudoephedrine have reformulated to contain phenylephrine, which is a nasal decongestant similar to pseudoephedrine but cannot be used in making meth and is not restricted in its sales. (You can go to Walmart in the middle of the night when the pharmacy is closed and buy phenylephrine-containing cold medicines such as Sudafed PE, but not pseudoephedrine.) Phenylephrine is also less likely to have the effect of keeping you awake after you take it. However, it is not as strong of a nasal decongestant and some people complain that it is not strong enough to clear their symptoms.

I believe pseudoephedrine is metabolized by the liver but I don't want to steer you wrong on this; I know that wikipedia has a very informative article on the mechanism of pseudoephedrine and its differences from phenylephrine.
