Ask for a straw. The barium is easier to swallow if it goes straight down and doesn't coat your mouth. The test doesn't take too long, but I doubt that you could read a book during the procedure. I've had this test a few times. Usually you are repositioned several times during the test so that the barium coats evenly and pictures can be taken at several junctures. It is nothing to fear. Be sure that you move your bowels afterwards to get all the barium out of your system. It can cause problems if you don't pass it. Ask whether you should take a laxative to move it along. Good luck, and don't forget the straw!!

The XR tech will give you a cup of stuff to swallow and then after you do that, she will start taking XR pictures.
You can read a book in between the XR pictures.
Its really not that big of a deal.
You will be fine. Stop worrying.
