On the first day of Shock and Awe as they called it, there were a lot of Tomahawk missles fired in that might have hit unsuspecting planes in their path...

Might have been to prevent "freindly fire" accidents, don't you think.

g-day!

What are you talking about?
Tornado GR1's and GR4's were actually the first across the border in both wars because they were and still are the best strike aircraft in the world.
Its the only aircraft in both wars that can carry Storm Shadow (obviously only the 2nd gulf war) and Alarm (Key weapons in any early phase of a campaign) an carry them at 100ft all the way to the target.

What actually happened was a huge TLAM attack quickly followed over the border by Tornados (escorted by F15's and Buccaneers during GW1) and F117's (they went for Baghdads AA system while the RAF went after bunkers and other AA systems.
The Americans cant do the low level work the RAF do as standard and there is not air arm in the world that is better at ultra low level strike.

They didnt know if the Iraqis had guns or planes that might be able to shoot them down 5 miles above the ground. No point in being a dead superhero is there.

They have to know what the targets are first. Satellite imagery is a great help, but so is the 'Real Time' information provided by ground reconnaissance units.

They don't have the survivability of the aircraft used. There was no sense in taking unneeded casualties. Once the air defense system was degraded, they were good to go.

Our American allies shot an RAF Tornado down with a patriot missile battery. With friends like that do we really need enemies?

Brits use many of the same aircraft as the Iraquis. No Brits means you can shoot anything else.
