and look forward to going to bed at night. I am on 40mg of prozac and just started increasing it to 60mg. Don't really know if that will work, not counting on it. I know you aren't DR's. and don't know me but what makes a healthy 50 year old woman that has a great husband, financially secure and looks pretty~good so miserable?

Menopause perhaps? those hormones can wreck havoc and depression can be a result. depression is a very insidious disease and can affect anyone at any age. I had my first major episode when I was 27. when I got better the staff said "you may go many years and you're life can be fine, married with kids etc. but you know the warning signs so don't ever be suprised should it happen again." Of course I thought about what they said, but certainly didn't dwell on it. I had a baby at 43, everything was fine for about six months. I got my period(had been nursing) and I started spiraling down that so long forgotten but oh so familiar road to depression. Keep taking your meds, sometimes they take a while to kick in. Maybe go t a support group and certainly you should be talking to a therapist. Good luck, don't worry you'll come out on the "other side" and be much stronger. Thank the Lord you have a great husband, mine walked out on me a few months later.

This is what you should do before you start thinking you have a mental disorder - have a thorough physical exam. Hormones are wacky at that age, I remember. Estrogen, progesteron, and testosterone all are mixed up.

Have a complete thyroid check too, not the customary one, ask for the detailed one or go see an endocrinologist.

You could very well have something physically amiss that is causing you mental anguish.

If all checks out physically, then delve into mental issues. You can write me a message if you like.

Think about seeing a therapist and doing some talk therapy - underneath the gloom there may be some things that need to be talked about. You could be going through something of a midlife crisis - not all of them are wild and crazy; a lot of them can reflect a kind of depression / dissatisfaction with life.

Usually it is the hormone shift .
Did a good doctor do those tests BEFORE dishing out the prozac or does he just toss that at everything ?
