I recently got a dog and have been walking him for the past 2 weeks. (Every morning at 7, and then afternoon.)

Then suddenly my parents are highly banning me from taking my dog outside to the park with is not even a block away. I'm 14, and my parents don't let me go outside when it's not even dark (like 4 pm.) and so many people are outside.

They say they watched the news and heard that this girl got kiddnapped when she was walking her dog. How idiotic is that? Sure, being protective is okay, but when it's being overprotective, it just tires me out. Isn't that unfair? What should I do? I tired, and you know sometimes I just want to fall alsleep.

I remember what it was like to a 14yr old girl. My parents were strict and what appeared to me at the time overly protective. Now I'm a mother I totally understand the concern and anxiety they had, still have, as parents. It's your instinct to protect your child, the fear and the thought of losing them can be overwhelming at times. It can be difficult as parents to balance that fear and instinct to protect, with allowing them to take independent steps. What with the tragedy of that young girl, your parents are probably thinking that could easily have been you, and they have instinctively reacted by wanting to keep you closer and safe. To them lossing you would be unbearable, so please as tired as you are cut them some slack, they are doing what all good and loving parents will do. This won't last forever, they will eventually give you more freedom.

Hagi I love you girl- ask your Mom or Dad to come with you- or get a friend to go.
What kind of Dog is it? Can it protect you cause I don't want nothing to happen to you either. I guess they worry so mcuh because that is all you freaking hear on the News now is these Pervs taking all these girls and doing horrific things to them - Not to mention killing them. We have one in our local prison right this minute that everyone thought was the Nicest guy in our Town and it turns out he has raped and molested like 12 girls.I know you are a very intelligent girl, but take some classes on how to protect yourself and maybe that will calm your parents a bit. Good Luck Sweetie- but please be careful, I would die if something happened to you!!
Hey take some Karate classes that might ease their mind!

If everyone spent all their time worrying abuot what might happen, they will never have a chance to enjoy life. I don't know what to say other then to talk to them, or try to get a friends parent (who they approve of) to talk to them.

Hang in there :), it does get better. My parents wouldn't let me in our backyard after sunset at 14...incase someone was waiting for me. Isn't that a bit silly? We live in a small city in New Zealand...in a safe area.

When I turned 16 it got quite better, then when i turned 17...they let me do as I wished, as insane as it sounds.

I'm 19 now, and still think they were absolutely insane, but at least its over!

This might seem unjust to you, but your parents obviously love you and are trying to protect you. When I was 16, 17, 18 and up my mom still hated for me to go anywhere (especially out walking) by myself and we lived in a relatively safe smaller city. They love you, and later you will realize this. I know it sucks now, but try to find a friend who can walk with you so you are not out alone. If you have a sibling or cousin that is close by, have them go with you, this might make your parents more comfortable.

i have twin 15 y/o daughters. please understand how gut wrenching it is for a parent when they see stories like that on the news. it makes them mentally place you as that girl. be glad that you have caring parents. maybe they will let you walk your dog with a friend.
