okay...so i've kind of done a few notes w/ my friend to see if i enjoyed playing... i prefer electric over acoustic...so i'm getting an electric (possibly cause i'm a girl..and it fits my hand better)...but i know a lot of ppl teach themselves how to play...but i think about how complicated it seems...and i'm just like "uhhhh...?" i think i have potential to be good at it...i pick most instruments up fairly easily...but does anyone have tips/suggestions/experiences....etc??? thanks!!!

Private lessons.

Best way to go.

And always take time to explore and enjoy the instrument.

OK. The only thing about getting an electric is the cost .U have to have an amp as well. U might do well to get acoustic first to see if you get on with it. Anyway, if possible buy a electronic tuner. They make life so much easier. Get a book of chords. Concentrate on 2 or 3 simple ones- A D E are good. Start with one, eg A. When you can play that, try another one. Then practise changing between them. There are stacks of songs out there with these 3 chords.Johnny B Goode (Chuck Berry) Hound Dog/Blue Suede Shoes (Elvis)
He's Got The whole World in his Hands. going to the Zoo. The list is endless. Next chord should be G. That gives U 2 keys to play in. A (A, D, E, ) and D (D, G ,A) . Hope this helps.

Don't fret! Playing guitar takes a long time. Well it actually depends on how talented the player is. Don't worry I'm not one of them. I've been playing for 3 and a half years. All you need to know is how to press the notes and cords down firmly on the fretboard. It is also best to learn how to read staff, TAB, and cord names. Knowing a few basic cords might be helpful. (A,Am, C, D, A2, D2, E, Em, F, G, G7, A7, B7, C7, D7 ,Dm, E7, C add9, B, and Bm) Once you know these cords and can play them pretty well you can pretty much pick up any song with cords in it and play most of it without having to constantly look up how to play certain cords. With an acoustic guitar you'll be able to play anything from hard rock to classical. Learn a little Finger-picking style and know how to strum and use a pick. After that you'll need a private lesson teacher. I advise a teacher that plays rock. They are brighter than they look. To play good rock music they had to start like you. No one evers starts to play rock right away, It's too hard that way. They all have to start from classic or acoustic at first. Best way to improve while having a private lesson teacher is to take advantage of them. You're paying them so do wat you want! Go get songs you like off the internet (best to find pages with both lyrics and cords) and if you can the song itself. Put the song on a CD and print off the pages. Bring them to your private lesson teacher and make him teach it to you. Make sure the song doesn't have more than about 4 cords that you don't know or it might be too hard. Slowly work up from there.
If your teacher is really good he's be able to write out the rifts and small solos in the song. Usually the pages won't show those. Learn those and you'll sound awesome!

Everyone says practicing at least 30 minutes a day will help you improve greatly, and it is true! But we all get lazy sometimes or we don't have the time (even me!). Still try to practice at the very least 3 times a week, anytime when you're stitting around doing nothing. Learning music takes a long time so keep trying hard. People you see in Rock bands or people you know probaly have had at least 30 years of expeirence so they will be better. Just ask them how they did it and they're tell you "PRACTICING A HECK OF A LOT!" Try to learn as much of it as early as possible becuase once you get in High School and College you won't have much time at all. People might also tell you to learn Theory. It's so hard I tried and I was always so confused. But once you know it you can basically play as well as they do.
SO NEVER GIVE UP AND KEEP PRACTICING!!

Sure! A lot of people self teach! Just go online and learn the basic guitar chords and the fingering pattern for them. Once you know those, practice strumming. Practice practice practice! If you have a friend that plays, have them teach you!

I've taught myself how to play guitar and i'm a girl too. But I suggest you start off learning acoustic guitar first and then move on to electric because acoustic strings really help build up those calouses on your fingers! Good luck

Check out some of these web sites and see if there's something that you like, the first set are free, the others are sites that teach on line, some have a few free lessons to get you started and then they want you to buy their Cd's, videos, DVDs, books, or get their on line lessons. The free sites as far as I'm concerned aren't very good, the other have some very good sites, I wish that they had these when I first started guitar.Of course I think the best way to learn guitar is to have a private teacher or go to a music shop and have lessons one on one, that's what I do teach privately, but a lot of kids can't afford that and I understand. I teach classical guitar....there aren't too many who want to learn that today....most want to learn rock....I also teach finger style..I'm finding more and more kids want to learn that style then they did a few years ago, which makes me happy !!!!!!!

learn songs! Get guitar tabs online and play the song... that way you can learn the basic chords and stuff like that... but choose really easy songs to play when you first start off!
