I'm going to work on F15 or F22 avionics (preferably F22) and want to know which is a good base to be stationed at. The only Air Force Bases I know of that have F22s are Langley, Eglin, Tyndall and Elmendorf. Langley looks like a good one. Also can anybody tell me what RAF Lakenheath and Nellis are like? Thanks.

I live in California and have been to Vegas about 4 times before. I lived in longon for 11 years, so I should fit right in at Lakenheath... Langley, Elmendorf and Eglin are looking pretty attractive now... I'll pick a best answer later.

Langley is a fabulous base and Virginia is a beautiful state. The drawback is that it is expensive to live there.

Lakenheath is nice, but the dollar is not doing so good against the pound. Could be expensive.

Eglin is on the Emerald Coast and the water is truly emerald green. There is a lot to do but I must tell you it's extremly hot and humid. Cost of living is affordable and if you buy north of Eglin in one of the smaller towns (Crestview) you can get much more for your money.

Tyndall is located in Panama City and here again is very hot and humid but the beaches are beautiful. Cost of living is a little more here than Eglin.

Elmendorf is great. If you're young and adventureous it's probably one of the best places. It's also an associate base so that could be interesting. Now, single life might be a little off there, but it truly depends on what you life. Alaska is beautiful and a wonderful place to be stationed.

Nellis of course is in Las Vegas. It's a high operations base and you'll be working a lot. It's very hot there in the summer but has lots of wildlife. You probably know a lot about Vegas already. I'm unsure if I'd want to live there. It is O.K. to visit, but probably wouldn't be where I'd want to live.

Hope this helps you. My husband supplied the information as he is a Lt. Col. in the Air Force. Enjoy your next tour and stay safe!

Well I can't speak for the others but I can tell you stay away from Langley AFB! I was stationed there about 2 years ago and unless you are a General you get defecated on daily. You know it's bad when full bird colonels say this base sucks so stay away from Langley if you can.

Nellis AFB just north of Las Vegas. Short drive to Las Vegas. Town treats GIs pretty good..lots of military retirees in the area as well. Downside...you can fry eggs in the summer on the flight line. Gets really hot. My brother was stationed there in the late '60's

Eglin and Tyndall are both in the Florida panhandle, and pretty nice places. Elmendorf, of course, is in Alaska, with all the attendant pluses and minuses of Alaska. Nellis is not only in Nevada, it is right at Las Vegas, with all THOSE pluses and minuses! Lakenheath is really close to London in England, and a nice base, especially if you'd like to broaden your horizons at the government's expense.

Eglin is the best stateside AFB.

It's right on the Gulf Coast,

And the area has the best beach's in the US.

Plus, it is still close enough, you can easily drive to most of the US east of the Mississippi.

Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii

It is home to the 15th Airlift Wing (15AW) and 67 partner units including Pacific Air Forces Headquarters and the Hawaii Air National Guard.

History shows Hickam played a pivotal role in past Pacific operations - bullet-scarred walls are still visible from the December 7th, 1941 attack that pushed the U.S. into WW II.

Today, the 15AW remains the launch point of strategic air mobility and operational missions in support of the Global War on Terrorism as well as special air missions in support of the commander, Pacific Command and commander, Pacific Air Forces.
