sara, it's not ABOUT what's "easier!"
If you can't convince yourself that Peter Pan is still alive and Tinker Bell is with him, then it's not going to work to TRY and believe in a god when nobody has EVER seen one. It's all based on hearsay.
Someone thousands of years ago thought they saw some magic and someone said that a god did it. So ever since then, people have believed that a magic god existed then and is still alive and existing now. No one has yet to see this supposed "god," but people just accept it. Some myths and legends never die.
I don't need someone to look out for me. My mom and dad did that while they were alive, and when they passed away, I was on my own and took over the job of "being there" for my daughter. That's just life. Because I'm agnostic and spiritual, I believe my deceased family has joined the mass "Consciousness" that is the location of all the sentient energy that leaves a corporeal body to join the the big, happy Ball of Light. LOL (I honestly don't know what it looks like).
Cheers.

I actually find the concept of there being nothing but the circle of life comforting...
Knowing that the complexities of life have evolved from the nothingness of space to this wonderful planet means that the process is happening elsewhere in the universe and that no matter what we do to ourselves here on Earth, LIFE is guaranteed to continue on into infinity because everything just keep spiraling on. We are just ants crawling around on the beach.
I feel that a belief in God is only necessary when a person feels the need to explain things that they can't wrap their head around.
Just because we currently don't comprehend the origins of life doesn't mean that there is an AUTOMATIC supernatural component to it... Just like 100 years ago we couldn't have imagined the internet... It doesn't mean that god created the internet.
I find it to be a very sad thing for a person to require the promise of heaven and the threat of hell in order to not go on a raping and pillaging spree and to be a good person!
I feel that there should be no reward needed to be a decent human being and if you need to be threatened by a priest to not steal and kill then you shouldn’t be allowed into heaven either!
I also feel that any god that demands to be worshiped is not deserving of devotion.
We have been gifted with this life… no matter how $#!tty of a time you may be having… and you need to live life to the fullest extent!
Depriving yourself of that which you enjoy only leads to sadness and a feeling of being unfulfilled.
Why live life like that?
We need to make the most out of every moment we have and you can’t do that when all you are concerned with is if some guy in a uni-sex robe and a pointy hat will agree with you!!
I have a rather crappy life… I have been disabled and unable to walk without pain since the age of 10 and, at the age of 26, need a hip replacement that I can’t afford to get… I had an abusive, drug addicted and alcohol addicted mother that beat the utter crap out of me constantly and even shot at me a couple of times! I have depression, PTSD, and Borderline Personality Disorder.
Each day I actually contemplate suicide!
I can’t believe that there is a god out there that would judge ME deserving of hell after every single particle of my being has been formed as the result of pain and abuse.
I can’t believe that, in a world so full of facts and verifiable scientific evidence that there is anyone out there that still NEEDS the comfort of “God” in order to get out of bed in the morning.
The truth of the matter is that no matter if you are a believer or not, 99% of the population of the planet will be forgotten, utterly, within 3 or 4 generations… It will be as if you never existed…
So how about just trying to make the best of TODAY and the small moment’s of happiness that you can have and not start feeling guilty about every good feeling you have?
p.s. icarus62, you are my hero...
I'm going to copy/paste your answer and email it to everyone I know.
THANK YOU! You are briliant!

It is not easy for me to believe in something that makes no sense, unless it proves to have some type of direct impact on my life. Gravity is a good example of this. I do not understand how it works, but it affects me daily no matter how I feel about it. The concept of god does not have the same affects. There is no evidence of a god interacting with my life in any way. There is evidence of gravity causing me not to float away.
The only real difference the existence of God (the Christian god) could possibly have in my life would be what happens to me after death. However, since I have a basic understanding of the nervous system and the human brain, I know that it will be impossible for me to have consciousness or to feel pain or pleasure after my body dies and ceases to function.
So it is actually easier for me to believe what makes the most sense rather than forcing myself to believe something that makes no sense for the sole purpose of appease a possible fear of the unknown (death).

Sure, it would be very comforting to believe in an all powerfull and loving God that always has your best interests at heart. Sort of like a super parent I suppose.
So yes, I agree that'd be swell.
The problem is just because it's a nice feeling, doesn't make it true. Also, you can't just make yourself believe in something you don't and there's absolutely no evidence to support the idea of any god, let alone the one described by christians.
I hope that's a decent answer, and double checking, I don't think I bashed any religions. Please let me know if I did.

I don't believe in God because I don't believe God is real. I don't know any other way to say it. I'm not going to pretend to believe in something I don't.
As for it being somehow simpler, how do you know you are worshiping God in the right way? How do you know that Christianity is the right faith? Only a third of the world is christian. At best you only have a 1 out of 3 shot at being correct.

Christians, why don't you believe in many gods? Wouldn't it be easier to know what there are many gods with various powers looking out for you, like Zeus and Hera to Greeks?

I just don't ... it makes no sense to me & I have no faith which makes me just "believe" without real proof.
It might be "easier" to believe and think that there could be a devine entity "out there" ... but I can no more believe in that than I can believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Peter Pan, or Mickey Mouse.
I don't say that YOU shouldn't believe or that your beliefs aren't right FOR YOU... and if you sleep better at night because you have this "faith" - then good for you. But that doesn't work for me... and I'm happy with that.

Um, because I was raised this way and don't believe in that stuff. No, I see no reason it would be "easier" as I don't believe in such things.
And why shouldn't people bash if folks like you come on here with your assumptions that we should all believe like you do and demand to know why we don't?

Why don't you believe in the thousands of other gods?
You don't *know* somebody's looking out for you, it's just what you think.
And that's the same guy allegedly "looking out" for kids who are raped and then murdered.
Nobody has ever provided any evidence that any gods, much less a specific god, exist. People believe in specific gods because of indoctrination from an early age, tradition, hallucinations, fear of torture (for gods sadistic enough to threaten it) and other similarly illogical reasons. But no gods exist in reality; these are all stories, created for people who were scared of the world long before we understood it. Now we have no more reason for these superstitions.

Well, it would be *nice* to think that there might be someone out there looking out for us, but it would be nice to find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, too. Just because something sounds nice, it doesn't make it fact.
And as for whether or not it would be *easier*...no. It's not "easy" for me to believe in magical, invisible, supernatural beings for which there is no evidence.
