Ok I have a 3 1/2 month old Pomeranian/Maltese mix, and after she poops she turns around and eats it? My Chi, was fully house broke, but here lately has decided to start pooping inside, and my Pom/Maltese runs over there before I can get something to pick it up she will eat it?! I've asked this question before on why dogs do this, and some say it was because she wasn't getting the right nutrients... Since that I've switched her dog food to Bil Jac, and she is still doing this! What else could it be? If it is a nutrient that she's needing what would the nutrient be?

This behavior is not always caused by an absence of nutrients. It can become a compulsive behavior out of pure habit. It is in your hands to prevent it. You cannot allow her to have the opportunity to eat either her own or anyone else's poop. If she's on a leash outside, there's no reason you can't pull her away as soon as it hits the ground. As far as the Chihuahua is concerned, if he isn't already crate trained, I recommend doing so. As far as this behavior is concerned, your only hope of countering it is prevention. Your dog will not continue a behavior that she is not put in a position to act out in the first place. Make sure whenever it does happen, however, you correct her with a firm "no!" and clap your hands or stomp your foot to distract her. You may also try throwing a small bag of coins next to the poo when it's inside to scare her away from it (by the noise alone, don't throw it at her.)

A more scientific reason why your puppy is eating dog feces is that it is trying to eat the nutrients missed from the other dog. When an animal eats, it passed through it's system. Through the process, the body absorbs the nutrients... however, a lot of the nutrients are missed because of the speed of the metabolism and are literally pooped out. A lot of bears do this to keep their nutrient content up, by eating the nutrients missed that are in their feces. Otherwise, puppies are very curious and get into all sorts of chaos. He/she will grow out of it. I suggest walking them separately for a little while. EDIT: Perhaps your puppy needs food that are more packed with nutrients, fatty acids, etc. Puppies need food MUCH higher in concentrated fats and rich ingredients than an older dog.

Some dogs do this behavior because they are mimicking their mother (mothers do this to clean up the den) if she's only 3 1/2 months then that is it. If you are taking her outside to poop on a leash then you should be able to control her and stop her from eating it by walking her away. If they are going in the house then you need to stop and take them outside to poop, make sure you pick up the yard regularly.
Another trick is to mix chopped up pineapple in both your dogs meals, it will make the poop taste terrible and this should get her to stop.

Does the dog in question also roll in it? If so, she might be "depressed" or unhappy. Granted, it is a strange way to express that "feeling." Different dog breeds need different kind of attention and surroundings. Dogs get bored of waiting for their owner and always playing in the same yard. I've had a dog that had the same problem but once we moved to a more interesting place where she had more things to do (and more things to look at), the problem went away.

The practice is called corpophagia. Rabbits do it all the time. I read somewhere that dogs that are given insufficient room in kennels will take up this practice but I am not sure how to cure your problem. I would suggest talking with a highly qualified vet to see how to remedy the situation.

In my experience, if you're feeding your dog too much / too often then their poo is only partly digested (Dogs are notorious for not knowing when to stop eating) and it will encourage them to eat their own or other dogs poo. Try only feeding once a day, one bowl and add in a starvation day once a week. It may seem cruel but it allows their system to clear out (like a human de-tox) and mimics their natural environment. You have to remember that domestication of dogs is relatively recent on an evolutionary scale and their systems are not really adjusted for regular and complete feeding, rather for feed/famine.

I was told that The Turd resembles regurgitated food that the mother dog would normally feed her pups, very common problem. try keeping her on her leash and every time she goes for the turd pull up on the leash(quick jerk) and command stop.
she will learn if you can be consistent.
hope this helps

Hmm, it could be that or just a bad habit. Have you tried putting pineapple in her food? It makes her poop taste bad. Your vet can also give you stuff that makes your dogs poop taste bad too.
