Ignore anyone who isn't medically qualified and GET YOURSELF TO AN ORTHOPEADIC SPECIALIST! Sport injuries can be serious, difficult ro treat and take a long time to heal without the proper treatment.
Do not try to carry on regardless. If you break your knee completely you are in a wheelchair or up for a replacement that will only last 10 years,

your knee is held together by 4 ligaments...medial (inside) collateral ligament, lateral (outside) collateral ligament and the cruciate ligaments (between the upper and lower leg bones) it is surrounded at the joint by a capsule and supported by muscle tendons. These are the structures that are pain sensitive. One or more has been injured. If your doc doesn't know how to tell which one...go to an orthopedic surgeon now before the structures permanently weaken

try to get a referral to knee specialist, i played football too and our trainer would say the same thing then when they see a real doctor or specialist they find out they have a knee sprain. acl, mcl, pcl, and meniscus tears are very common in football and require rest, rehab and many times surgery to get back to normal. try to get another opinion especially if it continues to hurt after a couple weeks of rest and ice.
