they expect to? - having been led to believe that once you reach a certain decade things start to drop off and go wrong.
A lot of 'oldies' that I know say, when they get an ache or pain, that it must be old age. Well, I don't buy into that. The mind is very powerful and believes whatever you tell it.

To some extent, I think what you are saying is true. A person can choose to remain active (and "youthful") or not. Keeping the mind and body healthy and active is always a good idea. I agree that the mind is a very powerful thing and definitely those with a positive outlook on aging fare better than those with a negative view of it. But the mind is not enough to stop natural biological processes.

Human biology does result in inevitable changes as people age, which include but are definitely not limited to; aches and pains becoming more common, possibly because of the many years of wear and tear on joints and cartilage. Bone density changes, increasing the risk of fractures. People lose height. Advanced age is a major risk factor for many diseases. Senses decline eventually (sight, hearing, etc.) Skin loses elasticity. Hair turns white or gray. Our bodies are not built to last forever, but it is possible to remain healthy well into late adulthood and I do think attitude is a factor there.

Mechanically, say on a swingset, joints and connections wear, and without adequate lubrication squeaks develop. Given enough weight being swung, and enough hours and years of swinging, those joints WILL wear through, dropping the swing to the ground.

Now, our bodies are not swingsets, but rather we are alive, made up of bones and muscles, joints, electrical nerves, and with a circulatory system, a breathing system, a digestive system, plus so much more, and a brain to govern it all.

Look at the knee joints of a 6 yr old child
and also look at the knee joints of a 60 year old. You will find that an extra 54 years of pounding wear is noticeable. That being so, even if the muscles and nerves still work as well as they did 5 decades before.........those nerves would tell you that the knee joints have become worn with age and use, they would be stiff in the morning, and cause a certain amount of pain ........... because it must be....."OLD AGE"

Because the mind is so very powerful and believes whatever you tell it.........we have elderly people in old folks' homes who BELIEVE THEY ARE YOUNG.........But their belief won't get them very far these days.

Believe what you want but if you live long enough you get old and it does affect you physically.

There is a lot of truth to what you are saying. Always think young and you will feel young.
