They were two different people. Mormon was a prophet in the Americas around 400 AD. He took the history and teachings of previous prophets and abridged them onto plates of gold. He called it the Book of Mormon. He left them with his son, Moroni. Moroni added a few books to it and then buried it. In 1823 Moroni visited Joseph Smith as an angel and showed him where the plates were hidden.

He never changed anyones name. The angel was Moroni and always was stated as Moroni. The book of mormon was named for Moroni's father who abriged the work, passed it to Moroni who then buried it in the earth until the Lord felt it was time to reveal it.

The bulk of the Book of Mormon (from Mosiah to Fourth Nephi) was abridged by a prophet named Mormon. Mormon inserted a segue from the Small Plates of Nephi (ends with Omni) to his abridgement of the Large Plates of Nephi. He then added his own story. When Mormon was old, he passed the plates to his son Moroni. Moroni abridged the Jaredite Plates (the Book of Ether) and closed with his own words. Moroni hid these plates.
In 1823 Moroni visited Joseph Smith Jr and showed him where the plates were hidden. In 1827 Joseph was allowed to keep the plates long enough to translate them and publish the volume as the Book of Mormon.
People started calling people who joined up with Joseph "Mormons" or "Mormonites" in reference to the Book of Mormon.

Wow, someone has been reading some strange sources......As others have said, Joseph was visited by the Angel Moroni. His father was Mormon, and Mormon compiled the books into what is now the Book of Mormon. It is named the Book of Mormon because Mormon was the prime abridger of said book.

expensive “Chained” thank you for such an stunning information for this assertion: the placement of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is so sturdy its enemies would desire to distort, deceive and dissemble to have plenty to declare against it. Your long, long decrease and paste would desire to be replied factor-via-factor (and has been, persistently), yet to steer away from boring every person right here, enable’s purely look at one in each of your statements: “Smith says in 1835 he won a revelation from God that Smith became commanded to tell the folk, that the Lord became going to return in fifty six years. that would desire to signify that Christ would desire to have returned in 1891. all of us know that did no longer take place. So returned, Joseph Smith gave a faux prophesy.” Now, look on the surely words of Joseph Smith. We’ll no longer use the historical past of the church for quite a few reasons. it is not scripture, and no responsible guy or woman might evaluate the church sure via statements written there. That’s on account that's each so often misguided, because of the fact it became written via others no longer Joseph Smith, and various it became written long after the activities. like quite a few responsible historian, one would desire to in no way place self assurance in a secondary source while the extensive-unfold source is obtainable. thus, the surely revelation itself has been intently preserved, and includes verses 14 by using 17 of Doctrine and Covenants one hundred thirty. It reads: “i became as quickly as praying very earnestly to know the time of the appearance of the Son of guy, once I heard a voice repeat right here: “Joseph, my son, if thou livest till thou artwork 80-5 years previous, thou shalt see the face of the Son of guy; hence enable this suffice, and hardship me not greater in this remember. “i became left for this reason, without being waiting to return to a call no remember if this coming talked on the subject of the beginning up of the millennium or to 3 previous appearing, or no remember if I would desire to die and for this reason see his face. “i've got faith the appearance of the Son of guy is purely no longer any in the past than that factor.” as quickly as we examine the words of the prophet, the only “prophesy” is a touch imprecise assertion, asserting the Lord won't come for a minimum of fifty six years. That “prophesy” has come genuine, of direction.

It's good that you are asking questions because you have your facts messed up.
To Oregon Flower - You've misread those verses in Revelation. You seem to enjoy spinning everything to justify your anti-Mormon hang-up. Like using a question to call Mormons "morons"

[shaking my head] nope, nope, nope [sigh]
Joseph was never visited by Mormon. Mormon was Moroni's father. The Book of Mormon was abridged by Mormon [it was the writings of prophets and kings that spanned over a thousand years], and then Moroni was given charge of it.
Get your facts straight before you attempt to bash, dude.
