To my knowledge the person with Vitiligo has a chemical imbalance in their body and the body manufactures too much peroxide. That then starts the destruction of the cells for pigmentation.

There may auto-immunity involved in vitiligo, but nobody knows for sure. When a disease involves auto-immunity, it's the body's own immune cells that start attacking certain cells in the body. The recognition of "self" vs "invader" gets confused. Certain shapes on "self" cells look like the invaders to the immune cells.

Vitiligo is a loss of pigment in the skin. It does have an auto immunity factor and can be caused by pernicous anemia, hyperthyroidism and Addison's disease.
