It helps, but combined with a good recoil pad like the Pachmayr Decelerator your shotgun will have a lot less recoil.

The difference is night and day. .22LRs have no discernible recoil, when shot through an adult sized rifle, whereas the recoil from a 12 gauge shotgun can knock over a small/weak person. 10 gauge is worse, 20 gauge is less than the 12, and the .410 is even lighter. What are you going to be shooting? At 6' and 250, You will get used to it with no issues. Have fun.

I can't imagine one would be needed on a 12 gauge unless you shoot 3" or 3.5" magnums. As long as you shoot 2.75" and hold the shotgun properly recoil isn't that bad, in fact I would consider it to be a sudden "push" rather than what most people would call "kick".
I have a recoil boot and I only really use it on military surplus guns with steel butt plates when I shoot in a t-shirt. It doesn't eliminate recoil but attempts to soften it. For me, it just reduces the nasty bruising that a steel butt plate creates.

recoil is a perception that can only be known to the shooter
I have no problem with the 404 Jeffery's, 375 H&H, or 50bmg barrett model 99 but I think a 7MM mag kicks very bad and don't like shooting them
but some recoil pads work better than others and right now IMO the limbsaver line is the best beating out the decelerator by a hair

Its kinda tough to say exactly how much but they do reduce felt recoil. Several of the older guys at the trap club use the and swear by them.

Nothing can take away recoil, only reduce it.*
