You might want to reconsider, not leaving this oppressive country, but leaving it for England. There's a very practical reason for this, your US dollar is virtually useless there. London is one of the most expensive cities on the planet!
Why not consider Quebec city (you would have to speak French), or Halifax. Friendly, progressive, (Quebec is international in flavor; Halifax is all Canada/all day). It is difficult, but not impossible for a talented youngish (but not too young) American to become a Canadian. Travel there, meet people.
I nearly moved to Montreal about three years ago, but a new relationship locally prevented that occurring.
For some, America can be a very oppressive country. I know it's hard for those who really fit in here to realize that. There is no reason you cannot move elsewhere and find a life that suits you to a "T." [I genuinely feel that patriotism is akin to nationalism and we all should learn to value most our human commonality. There should be no US/THEM cluture.]

Ha! I'm alone, too and want to move to Canada.
Moving abroad ain't an overnight thing. So much red tape.
If you have a degree it will be a cinch. If you are a blue-collar worker like myself, a non-aristocrat, our options are limited.
I was like you, and still am, but realize that moving abroad will not automatically end loneliness.

Go to England using a visitor visa and upon arrival declare for a political asylum and prove that you are persecuted in your country.

American children have no idea what "oppressive" means. They are almost tragically ridiculous. England is also a wonderful place full of wonderful people. They know a fool when they see one too.
So get your visa and work permit, if they will give you one. Pack up your ipod and your cell phone and your designer jeans and hop on a plane.

I don't know where you are, but I hear England isn't one of the nicest places to be these days either. You should do some research before choosing a new home. Here is a website with the information you requested.

Depending on where you are, train, plane, or automobile. Ship, bicycle, or you can even "hoof it". There are other ways, but that's a nice start for you!! Don't know where you are, but it sounds like it's "terrible" for you. BYE!!
