Harry Potter is not witchcraft; Harry Potter is fiction. I'm a Christian sci-fi and fantasy fan, and think that discouraging people from reading the Harry Potter series (or "Lord of the Rings", and other works of fiction) is a really bad idea. It's okay to use our imaginations. It's especially important to encourage reading and the use of creativity and imagination among children, and the Harry Potter books seem to do a good job of that.

Well, the bible forbids certain things like divination and placing mind influencing enchantments on others.

Doesn't say anything about fireballs and flying brooms. So I guess it would be OK so long as you follow the guidelines and worship Yahweh only.

From a christian perspective that is.

However, Harry Potter is a work of fiction so it is purely entertainment and not a manual on witchcraft.

That ideology reminds of the days when evangelicals thought D&D taught you witchcraft and devil worship...

This bugs me on so many levels. Harry Potter is NOT REAL! if we were talking about Charlotte's Web or Stewart Little both successful children's books (that were also turned into movies) we could say they are also evil for depicting talking livestock. pigs and mice don't talk so they must be the work of Satan! I see no difference. Learn what is real and what is not. Don't blame your religious insecurities on a children's book.

I'm a Christian, and at the moment I'm taking a module at my university called Myths, Monsters and Legends, which primarily looks at witchcraft, sorcery, paganism etc. I find it fascinating. But i honestly don't think Harry Potter is a good example :P

Not a christian myself, but JK Rowling, who wrote the Harry Potter series, IS a christian.

What harm can reading a book like that do anyone? It shows good values to have in life, is well-written and encourages people to read more.

An atheist

I dig the Harry Potter books muchly. Also, it may be a cliche but it's true: many of my best friends are practicing witches. Fascinating religion. Nice folks. Very tolerant of my difference from them.

While the Harry Potter books are mostly fantasy, I tend to stay away from them, because as a christian, I believe that I should keep away from anything that even looks evil. Real witchcraft is evil.
