Because God is love, if we really understood this then we really do not need to ask.

Do you really hope to get an answer or a collection of oppinions?
I submit, most of the answers will be of the oppinion category. With that proposition stated in the first place I will submit the following:
At some place, time, or location, perhaps even a different dimension, we were perhaps "quantum" packets of energy. with no more shape or form then a burst of electrical energy in a copper wire, leading to your favorite computer and key board. In that state we were perhaps "aware" but with out the ability to relate to any form of physical relationship. A supreme force, anxious for these individual "quantum packages to enlarge the awarness they had at that instant, decided to prepare a surrounding these "Q/P" could relate to each other and physical surroundings. Hmm why not collect other forms of energy and create matter. Recall the little formula E=MC, squared.
Assemble sufficent energy and collect a mass of physical matter with it. Now you have a place for all those little "Q/P" to find a place to also become physical matter. Guess what, in becoming physical we found out there are things and peoples (other "Q?P") we like or dislike. All ,of a sudden there seems to be a slight glimmer, of that which we come to call society.
In this society, what are the main activities of physical life? None other then, "food, shelter and reproduction". However there soon arrises the need to begin to relate to things other then other "Q/P" ...people. We must learn to rub to sticks together to roast that wild pig we have just dispatched back to the other "deminsion" of energy packages. However we have learned the first lesson to find food.
In the intervening years we have continued that learning program. Why we even have learned to push little buttons on something that is called ? a key board, and talk with some one some place we have no idea where they are.
Why are we here?
Think about. If you have a better idea, lets hear it.

Let us examine the intents of the controller. Why is He putting the living entities under the stringent laws of material nature? God says that all the living entities who are struggling in the material nature are His parts and parcels[Bhagavad gita 15.7:( "The living entities in this conditioned world are My eternal fragmental parts. Due to conditioned life, they are struggling very hard with the six senses, which include the mind").]. Therefore one might ask why He doesn’t stop this struggle at once and simply bring the souls out of here? The answer is that although the Supreme Lord is full of compassion for His parts and parcels, they are eternally individuals by His divine will, and thus each individual has a minute amount of free will. His free will is such that he can decide either to be in this material world or to be in the spiritual world with God. For example, one can decide whether or not to put his finger in a flame, but once he puts his finger in the flame, the flame will act and burn him. That action of the flame is called the material nature. The individual spirit souls are just like God and are originally intended to be with Him in spiritual bliss, yet because they are small, they are prone to come under the jurisdiction of material nature. So why has He set up this material nature? Because the living entities desire it. The example is given of a child who sees her mother cooking in the kitchen and becomes envious of the mother’s superior position. The child declares to the mother, “No, I will be the cook. I will be the cook.” The mother, just out of a desire to quiet the child, may give her a toy kitchen set and let the child think that she is actually cooking. Another example is that when serious men are discussing something and a little child is in the room causing a disturbance, the child is put out of the room.
Once the living entity becomes envious of God, then he is removed from His association and put into the material world where he himself can act as God. He must, however, come under the material laws. This is actually the reality under which we are all existing in this material world.

Maybe that is the problem with theists, is that they think that they are "in" this world. I happen to live on this world, and when I die they will put my body in the earth.
If there is a God (which I am an atheist) then this must be some sort of science experiment that he would be doing. If not then he is just a cruel jerk who loves to watch pain and suffering. On the other hand, logic would dictate that there is no God and so we do not have to worry about it and can just get on with our lives.

God wanted a garden. He placed Adam as caretaker. He gave Eve to Adam as a helpmate. Then the devil and sin found their way into the garden, and that is where we all come in. having babies is part of the punishment placed upon women for there part in destroying Gods garden.

God put us on this world to challenge us. He gave us free will to choose between right and wrong. Whether we choose right or wrong, we are always tested with tests and trails. The tests are basically experiences. We are tests for each other.
