NASCAR is scratching their heads as to their TV ratings falling, but we haven't seen a good rivalry since Spencer retired. What do we have now? Jeff Gordon and Matt Keneseth? Please...the two nicest guys in racing.

We are starting to see some hatred out in the field - Hayrick vs. Montoya, Jr. vs. Kyle, Hamlin vs. Menard. But these are just some feuds that could easily blow over next week.

Here are some questions:
Why don't we see any bitter rivals any more?
-OR-
What drivers would make for a good rivalry?
-OR-
What were some of your favorite rivalries from the past?

I agree. In the past you had the Allisons vs. Cale Yarborough, Petty vs. Pearson, Earnhardt vs. Waltrip and so on. Maybe one reason is that 2 of the best drivers are on the same team (Gordon and Johnson) and Jr will be joining them next year also. Another reason may be that the money is so big for the drivers that maybe they are all just a little too content. Back in the day finishing in the top 10 or not might have been the difference in the bills getting paid or put off. They didn't have as big of purses so the whole racing for pride factor was a bigger part of it, in my opinion. I think Stewart vs. Edwards would be a good rivalry (the whole evil vs. good thing). Montoya vs. everyone (JPM does not discriminate against who he wrecks) is shaping up nicely. I think Kenseth and Gordon (the deal where Gordon left his helmet on at Bristol when he got paid back for what he did to Matt at Chicago) is a decent rivalry now but not like the ones from the good old days.

The rule changes got rid of the rivalries!!! Agressive driving penalties-- Rough driving penalties---Fining drivers and docking them points for cussing and fighting off the tracks. This was done to clean up Nascars Image and make it a more family oriented mootor sport partially----And Partially to keep some hot heads from tearing up others cars at a cost of 300.000 dollars a piece or more. The old Rivlries were great Yarborough--Allison Petty-Pearson and so forth.

That isn't the problem it is there sorry way of running the series. The people are more into there one driver than ever before. Spend some time here and see how everyone gets on people who like this driver and that driver. NASCAR won't let there but rivalries anyway you should know that. They don't like a driver looking the wrong way at another driver with out giving them a warning.
Have you been watching this crap in the last few years??

Earnhardt,Jr.-Gordon
Kurt Busch-Tony Sewart
Earnhardt,Jr.-Kyle Busch
But mainly it their fans.In the old days you did have some good ones like Yarbrough-The Allison Bros.
Richard Petty-David Pearson.
In a few years you will look back and think todays drivers were pretty good rivalries.NASCAR looks down on rivalries more today than yester year

NASCAR has finally managed to screw up a good thing. The economics of fielding a NASCAR cup team means that only the very wealthy can afford to be competitive. They have multiple cars and that shifts the competition to between teams and not between individual drivers.

NASCAR has also come down hard on clever innovation in favor of vanilla cars that that makes it harder to win.

I loved the rivalries of the past that built NASCAR into the powerhouse that it is. They have damaged that and I think have diminished the appeal of NASCAR for the fan.

The whole thing is run for the advertisers and not the fans. That was bound to screw it up. We now have the "official XXX of NASCAR" for everything. The fans feel sold out.

the drivers get pist off but won't fight anymore because nascar penalizes points. this could hurt them in the chase or the top 35. this happens the teams lose sponsors. then the drivers lose rides. bad stuff. that takes out the fights and the steam. my favorite was sr vs rusty wallace. carl edwards and tony stewart would be a good rivalry.

I am a die hard Dale Jr fan, I also like Jeff Gordon..Jeff learned a lot from Dale Sr, and he had a lot to do with Rick Hendrick hiring Jeff Gordon.. Jeff and Dale Jr are team mates, I have no problems with it at all. I think its great.. There is just a part of Jr Nation that just doesn't like Jeff, I say grow up, you can't deny that Jeff Gordon is a great driver, his stats say it all.. Go Dale Jr & Hms

I don't think that the Gordon vs. Earnhardt rivalry is over yet. Having the same car owner next year may put an interesting spin on things. :)

Every week it's a different rivalry. It usually involves either Kurt Bush or Kevin Harvick.
