Matthew 24:26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, [he is] in the secret chambers; believe [it] not.
Matthew 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

In Matthew 24 is a reference to the "eastern sky", but also we know it is "the East", specifically on the Mount in Jerusalem, (what is now known as the temple mount) by the prophecy that He will stand on the Mount and it will split in two!
It IS a literal, physical return AFTER the rapture of the church and His return WITH His church, the saints.

Jesus is in heaven and invisible we can't see spirits but we can discern his presence by the things he told us to look for it, and lightning can enlighten us, so light of truth will be from one end of the earth to another for all to see who bother to even try to see it. it will be available to those who want it.
he is already present we don't need to be looking to the sky, remember what was said to the apostles that watched a cloud take jesus from their site, the same way they saw him leave is how he will return. a literal cloud didn[t cover him he just became invisible like a clouse represents invisiblity. and angel said this by the way. we can see him with eyes of understanding.
