ok, chuckleheads, several answers, none right.
super has macpherson struts, standard doesn't. super gives better ride (when properly adjusted and cared for) due to the struts.
71 and 72 supers had flat windscreen, curved 73 and up.
super is slightly wider in the front end to accomodate the struts, which is why they are called 'fat chicks'
spare tire sits flat in a super, at an angle in a standard.
from the door posts back, it's the same car
standards are easier to lower, which is why they are the more popular with collectors.
i like a better ride which is why i have a super.

The biggest difference is the front suspension. The Beetle has torsion bar suspension and the Super Beetle has Macpherson strut suspension. If you are thinking of buying an older Volkswagen of any type, have a bodyman or independent VW specialist check the body,if there is any structural areas with rust, walk away from the deal.

I saw this question and had to chime in as my father and I used to restore VW Kahrman Ghia's. A vintage VW (if in good shape) is a fine car and will run forever with only normal maintenance needed. However, it will not be as comfortable as any of the newer cars on the road. The VW will return good gas mileage but no more than any of the new Kia's or Hyundais that are on the road now. The VW will probably be lacking in any of the normal things we take for granted in a newer car such as AC, Power Door Locks and Power Windows. But, if the car is running well and checks out with a mechanic and is a good price. It will probably serve you well as a daily driver and will give you more smiles per gallon than any other car you own. I have a friend who drives a 70's vintage VW daily and would not think of driving anything else.

The super beetle had front suspension problems and shaking problems that required the replacement of all the bushings and lower ball joints and strut insert assemblies, and track arms, to include perfectly balanced front tires...oh I forgot the upper plates that allow the strut assemblies to turn...
The regular beetle with the H-beam front suspension was the most common for all the years they were produced and seemed to be the best bet for longevity....
