Layers can be used to add volume or reduce volume.
On heavy, thick, straight hair, layers take off some weight & allow the hair to spring up adding volume.

On poofy, wavy hair, layers can be used to create definition & minimize the horizontal spread.

They add volume because when you don't have layers the weight of the hair pulls it straight down. If you do have layers it gets all that extra weight off and gives it a little volume. If you blow dry your hair upside down you are giving yourself volume too.

Layers add volume. You can ask to get your hair thinned, your stylist will cut pieces out of your hair, and it really does make your hair thinner, but you have to get your hair cut more often. Otherwise, it can look really stringy, and straggly when it's growing out. Talk to your stylist, tell them what you want, and ask what options you have. They'll be able to help you more than anyone on here can.

They increase volume. When you cut your hair shorter, it gets more "full of life" or poofy in a good way....
Then with the longer hair under it it makes it look like you have a lot of hair

they add volume and if you have think hair layers layers make your look thinner besides looking really nice

before u dry ur hair (best for morning showerers) pick up the hair on the top of ur head and spray underneath with volumizing hairspray. sorry if it does not work, you know different things for different kinds of hair. good luck!
