you work for a supplier of medical equipment. your sales manager informs you that he wants you to capture a certain hospital account. he also tells you to put on your expense account anything it costs to sedcure the firm as a client. when you ask him to be more specific, he tells you to use your own judgment. up to this time you have never questioned your sales managers personal code of ethics. make a list of the items you believe can be legitimately charged to the company on your expense account.

And the question is... what, exactly?

Meals
Calls
Food brought in during a sales call
Event invitations
Mileage

The sales manager should definately define the parameters.

I have taken customers to baseball games and wrote the whole thing off. I have brought flowers and plants in as well.

I have friends who have taken customers to Mexico to go deep sea fishing and done the same.
It's a matter of ethics for the company, both companies really.
Many companies do not allow their employees to be taken out or for their employees to receive any compensation or gifts at all.

It is an interesting question but the sales manager needs to give specific guidelines and that sale person needs to pressure for specifics.

Mileage to drive to and from the hospital and/or other meetings with them or related to them.
Meals. Taking them out, you know "wining and dining" them. The cost of samples or items used for demonstrations.
Promotional items used to let the staff know who you are and what you do and to keep your name (company name) in front of the prospective client.
I'm sure there is more, but I can't think of any right now.
Good Luck

your hotel expenses, transportation, meals, and entertainment of the client while soliciting the business seem legitimate to me.
