Onions help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. They also have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects. They relieve congestion in the airways.

They aren't high in calories so you can eat as many as you want.

The bad effects are that they will give you bad breath for a bit until they are out of your body. If you eat a LOT of them, it may take a couple of days and the onion smell could even come out your pores. Also, in some people it causes gas.

It has long been believed that eating onions is healthy for you. And I think nearly all the best recipes for main course foods (not deserts) use onions (or related things like garlic, shallots, leeks). I personally think 1/4 to 1/2 an onion per day in the diet is about right. I think the world of food would be a sad place without onions. Man has cultivated onions at least since the ancient Egyptians. Some people believe it was the first crop ever cultivated by man.
